Trade Deadline
Quote from MrPadre19 on August 3, 2023, 10:06 amBP arms probably the ones who have been most successful after traded but...they are also usually the easiest to replace.
Suarez comes to mind.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 3, 2023, 11:25 amSaw a story about players who may be available via trade in the offseason.
Soto on the list of course.
If there's zero chance of extending/signing him I think it needs to be considered...although I think he's a generational talent and a guaranteed Hall of Fame player who ,along with Manny and Tatis, would be amazing to see all 3 in the Hall wearing SD on their hats.
What if we could trade Soto for 2-3 good prospects(just 2 if good enough),then turn around and trade 3-5 good prospects to Chicago for Cease and Robert?
Cease is controlled through 2025 at Arb levels and Robert is signed to an extremely palatable contract through 2027.
These two combined make less than Soto so we'd have some $ for a DH/1B type and we would add a TOR starter and a starting CF option for years to come.
Would take a lot...but again,if we get a lot for Soto the impact on the "current" Farm wouldn't be that great.
Keep Salas and Lesko and make everyone else available.
Chicago is not good and their Farm is also not good...They need to do "something".
They are listed as 26th on this MLB list.

Merrill,Savala,Snelling plus the guys we get from Chi?
Just a thought to ponder on this off day.

Yup, it’s gambling time regarding Soto. If we hold into him for 2024 with the intention of signing him and he walks after the season, we’ll get nothing for him.
But he’s such a special player that Seidler will hopefully match any other offer made to him by another team. Of course, get ready for our competitors to really jack up his price just to screw us.
As things stand today, I gamble that we could sign him and keep him.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 3, 2023, 2:49 pmWith 53 games to go, it's a little too soon to see what direction the Padres go in the off-season but I believe their primary target is still the same - Shohei Ohtani. If they fail to sign Ohtani, then you have to look at who we lose to Free Agency, what other players may be available in free agency and/or by trade and how our farm system comes into play. All of that will be considered with what to do with Soto, who is really coming on in the latter part of this season and could be one of the main reasons we do make the playoffs.
The White Sox were supposed to be the model team that brought up international signees through their system, signed them to long term contracts early on and then added the right pieces to win it all. Unfortunately for them, injuries (including a couple of serious injuries to Robert) and failure to raise levels of performance to expected levels have done them in and they have not drafted well in recent years. If they lose Tim Anderson, Grandal and others, then I see them trying to rebuild around Robert and Cease rather than trading them. More likely there will be trading opportunities with small market teams like Tampa Bay and Milwaukee rather than the White Sox.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 3, 2023, 3:37 pmI think the Padres handled the trade deadline right…we still have a chance to make the playoffs and the pieces they added didn’t cost much outside of weathers and maybe they just didn’t see him getting to where they needed him to be.
I would try to sign Snell especially given the soreness for Musgrove and Wacha. Lugo probably opts out and Rich Hill is the type of “Thumber” that can be a good #5 in the rotation. Hader should get a QO and if he walks you get draft picks I think and one thing AJ is good at is identifying young talent. Closer is a luxury and the Padres always seem to be able to fill that role…Suarez, Barlow could be possible in that role but starting pitching is a must hence signing Snell.
I’m glad AJ didn’t trade any of our up and coming prospects
now it’s time for the Dodgers and to break it down to the very simplest equation…just win the inning and avoid crooked numbers by the opposing team.

Quote from Stergios on August 3, 2023, 9:23 pmDo you guys all think that we’re going after Ohtani? I’m dubious. I think they keep their $ for Soto. They may show interest, but how many 300+ M.$ contracts can they afford? Plus, they need to resign Kim and possibly Snell.
Speaking of Snell, how much do you think we should be willing to give him? He’s been inconsistent since arriving from Tampa. However, it seems to me that many pitchers peak in their early thirties (am I wrong?), so he may very well have a few good years left.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 3, 2023, 11:06 pmThere have been some suggestions that Soto is sort of the contingency plan if they can't land Ohtani. The idea seems to be that they'll pursue Ohtani aggressively, but could pivot to a Soto extension if he goes somewhere else. If they land Ohtani they could trade Soto or make 2024 the true all in year.
I feel like the Rodon deal might be a good benchmark for a Snell deal. Maybe he'll give us a discount since he seems to like it here, but 5-6 years in the neighborhood of 25m per year seems like what it might take to keep him.
