Verlander back to Houston

I think the latest on Thomas was that the Nats are valuing him like an everyday player while most teams are looking at him like a platoon guy. He's got pretty drastic splits. A deal might be unlikely given the difference of opinion.

Meneses would be interesting. His power numbers have been down, but he's come on strong lately. He could help the 1B/DH mix. I haven't seen any real indication that he's available though.

Reports are out there now that Cease is available from CWS, this seems like the big move that Preller might pull off.

He is having a down season from last year, but some is bad luck on balls put in play, so could be worth having him here through 2025 before FA.

I like Meneses as well...thought about him already but he's controllable for several years AND at league minimum...seemed like the kind of player the Nats would hold on to.

Yes, but if they are not contending in the next few years ... and given his age of 31 the control may be less compelling ... if they get a plus prospect that they see as a better option in maybe 2-3 years worth the rebuild.

Yep, sound like a Preller move ... 27, innings eater, low cost for now and 2 more years of control (via arbitration) to support the 2023 run and fill a potential big SP need in 2024-25. This one would take a Top 5 prospect plus. Sort of a Soto lite move. He is very good ... probably with more upside.

Would be coverage to the FA of Snell and Lugo and the question as to whether the Padres take the club option on Wacha.

I find it "interesting" that the uber wealthy lifelong Mets fan and now owner (Cohen) who went in big to sign players for a pennant run in 2023 got frustrated enough to go mega sell off when the Mets are still neck and neck with the Padres. Mets had the #1 CBT payroll by a lot for 2023 ... on track to be way under CBT level in 2024 ... under enough to go all in on Ohtani and still be under the CBT level.

Similar situation, but Seidler is not bailing. Two rich owners ... two different view of the situation.

Speaking of the NYM and their sell off, was listening to XM, and the hosts were speculating about the future of Alonso with the NYM. They are selling off pieces, Alonso is FA after 2024, and has had no real talks with NYM about an extension. Could Preller swoop in and wrangle Alonso from NYM?

Obviously a long shot, and would be very costly in terms of players going back to NYM. But Alonso could go a long way with fixing the issue with RISP and sub par performance batting wise from 1B.

Of course, would create another log jam on the INF. But could move Bogaerts to DH, Kim to SS, and Crone to 2B, with Alonso at 1B. That would help stretch the line up.

Depending on how much money they're eating on Verlander the Mets could be spending close to 100m on guys who aren't on the roster once the penalties are factored in. Cohen's money let's then play by a different set of rules.

At the beginning of July, Fangraph’s posted their mid season Padres top prospects list.  Suaro was at #10, one spot ahead of Wolf.  I had never even heard of this guy before today but damn, he has tools.

According to MLBTR, Rodriguez from DET has vetoed a trade to the LAD. Apparently the pieces were in place for the trade, and he did not want to go to LA.

He can veto trades to 9 other teams; including SD, so maybe that is why Preller acquired Hill instead of Rodriguez, sensing that he did not want to play on the West Coast.
