Trade Deadline

I think we’re underestimating the value of adding depth to the ML roster.  Wacha and Lugo cannot be relied upon to give us a lot of innings.  And if one of our top three gets injured, we’re in trouble.  So the deal makes sense.

Hill is, as someone put it above, “underwhelming”, but it seems like we didn’t give up much to close the deal, although I think Wolf  can develop into a solid #5 starter.

So - so on the deal but I guess this is what we should expect if the Padres are taking a go for it mentality ... considering not much on the market. Give some marginal longer term future for some marginal rentals.

I guess might speculate (worry) about the Padres really going with that all in strategy ... with 4 hours to go ... the Padres are setting up a bigger deal (at the cost of some of their top prospects) and / or some pieces off the 26 man ... good pieces.

The best part of this move is moving Lugo to the Pen.

He needs to watch his innings anyway plus he improves the Pen more than the two players we acquired improve the rotation or bench

I'm pretty sure we aren't done but 50/50 on any significant move still coming.

What position would it be?

My guess is another RP or a RH DH.

I don't see us adding another SP or another LH 1b/DH so.......any ideas on what a BIG move might involve as far as the return?

All these "minor" upgrades for the Padres (and other teams) have to do in their limited use is create an extra win or two in what is a tight race for the Wild Card among a lot of teams ... one game will be the difference between in and out.

RP might be high on the list. Would not rule out a middle rotation arm ... and sort through Lugo, Hill, Wacha for that 5th SP (6th when the use 6) and the others to the pen.

An OF/DH RHH bat might make sense (keeps Sanchez / Campusano as C only) ... platoons with Choi at DH ... and maybe supplants Grisham in CF. Basically adds some length to the offense ... supplants Batten ... so clearly an upgrade.

Not sure what BIG move means ... different to everyone. I will categorize it as requiring the Padres to move one of their top 5-6 prospects. Otherwise it is adding a BIG name but not necessarily a BIG upgrade.

Two names to watch out for from WASH:

Lane Thomas (28) with two additional years control ... RHH OF ... some good offense

Joey Meneses (31) with five additional year control ... RHH 1B ... very good offense and at league minimum

Both seem to be available and either would be good upgrades (no idea what it would take to get one or both).

I like Meneses - a clutch kind of hitter the Padres desperately need.  In retrospect, having just drafted Head and Bush, Suero likely won't pass either of them as a prospect in the next 3-4 years; feeling better about the deal.

I like Meneses as well...thought about him already but he's controllable for several years AND at league minimum...seemed like the kind of player the Nats would hold on to.

Reports that the Padres are OUT on Verlander.

I'm OK with this.

Also means AJ is not just throwing our prospects around this year.
