Trade Deadline

PreviousPage 21 of 28Next

The fact we went out and got a SP,and a very average one at that, makes me wonder about Wacha.

Is he OK or hurt more than we realize?

I think the play is to move Lugo to the pen.

Looks like the Pirates get: Jackson Wolf, Alfonso Rivas, and Rookie ball prospect CF Suero.

Net zero to the 40 man. Both Choi and Hill are FA after the season (padres probably pick up about $4+MM in 2023)

Choi's numbers are worse than Carpenters.

Hills numbers make him the 7th best starter on the team....and we now no longer have Jackson Wolf?

My guess is Carp is going away and Lugo to the Pen....OR,there's an issue with Wacha's recovery.

Could be, once Wacha comes back.  Keeps Lugo innings increase from being overly high plus he is a solid reliever that can handle the 7th, even possibly the 8th inning on certain days when Suarez needs a day off.  Could even possibly cover multiple innings if necessary.  Choi probably becomes the DH against RH starters.  Since Choi return from injury (achilles) in early July, Choi numbers have been solid.  Still waiting for Carpenter to be dumped.

Choi probably sits as the LHH DH (over Carpenter / and the departed Rivas). Been injured most of the season ... but some power ... so small upgrade.

Hill just puts a veteran in the mix ... think they go with Lugo until he starts to falter and we will see about Wacha ... but Hill probably is an upgrade over the rest of the incumbents and more of an insurance policy if Wacha has a longer issue and when Lugo is shifted to the pen.

The trade deadline is a now or never on a SP insurance policy ... so have to make a coverage move in the pocket even if still trying for the bigger deal.

Small but probably an upgrade ... Hill > Avila / Choi > Rivas I guess, if for no other reason both have playoff run experience.

Very moderate depth upgrade with this move. Not enough to really move the needle. Reminds me of a KT move under the watchful and restrictive eyes of John Moores (and very well could have been considering Rich Hill has been pitching since the cold war).

I like Choi. He's been hurt most of the year, but is healthy now and starting to get going. He's generally handles right handers well. Hill is whatever. I don't really think he's much better than our internal options. He can eat innings and might help the bullpen by pushing Lugo into it when Wacha gets back. Lugo has been pitching so well that it could be hard to take him out of the rotation with the way things stand though.

I would have rather just traded for Choi and held onto Wolf if that were possible. It's not really a huge loss for the Padres though. The industry seems to view Wolf as an up down guy. Suero is still very young and has an intriguing tool set. He's not doing much in the ACL at the moment. He's a lottery prospect. Overall I guess I don't love it or hate it.

Think it is an overpay.  Wolf has made great strides this year although his ceiling is a #5 starter; think he would make a valuable swing man at the major league level in a couple of years.  Suero has great upside but 3-4 years away at the earliest.  Has a little too much swing and miss at this point, but developing base running and power tools if he can improve his hit tool.  Rivas a throw in.   We shall see although the track record for prospects for established major leaguers usually favors the major leaguers.
