Either Preller has a deal pending in his pocket or an unexpected blockbuster … or maybe standing pat (with some of the call-ups) is in the cards at least as it pertains to bats. There are still others out there … just some may be hard to get with the limited quality trade chips.
Keeping with the theme … SF is acquiring A J Pollock and Mark Mathias from SEA … neither are doing all well in 2023 but both have better career stats so a bit of a gamble on a change of venue while maybe filling some deeper holes on the current SF roster.
But wait there is more
Cubs get OF Velazquez from the Royals
CINN get LHRP Moll from the A's
Maybe all small upgrades but still upgrades to teams ahead of the Padres ... and they just need to keep from going on losing streaks ... these moves help.
More ... AZ adds Jace Peterson.
Again not a big move but some ML experience for the bench and if that is an upgrade ... and turns into one more win that could be enough in this crowded wild card run.
Should add that both AZ and SF are not that far back from the LAD ... who have their health issues and could be vulnerable ... and yet to make a major move despite the rumors.

Putting one and one together to get "three", MLBTR is reporting that SD is looking for OF/DH help and of course the NYM are shopping Pham.
Please, please Preller do not trade for Pham again!!
In another MLBTR tidbit, it appears that both SD and LAD are interested in Eduardo Rodriguez from DET. He is under contract through 2026 with an AAV of $15.4M.

Rumor has it we're at least involved in discussions for Justin Verlander and Eduardo Rodriguez. I assume a Verlander deal would be structured like the Scherzer deal and require a stronger return. Given our slim odds this year and his age that would be a hard pass for me. Same goes for Rodriguez since he's likely going to opt out after the season.

Do you guys take the Verlander rumours seriously though? We need starting pitching depth, I’ll grant you that, but this team will go nowhere if X keeps batting fifth and grounding into DP’s.
A consistent bat is far more important I think. (But I realize that acquiring Verlander doesn’t preclude an acquisition of a bat as well.)

Seriously in that I think AJ at least checks in on every big name. I don't see Verlander waiving his no trade to come here when there are much stronger contenders involved though.

The only way a deal for a SP makes any sense is if they know they will have him for next season as well to replace Snell/Lugo.
Otherwise it looks like a move just to make a move.
We need a DH and a RP or two....we have one of the best rotation sin MLB.
Makes no sense unless 24' is involved.

Rich Hill & Ji Man Choi to the Pads from Pittsburgh. Where are giving up 3 minor leaguers, who did we have to give up? Well, one is the prospect I championed for this year in LHP Jackson Wolf. The other two minor league players are 1B. Alphonso Rivas and CF Estuar Suero.
Peavy was singing the praises of both Hill & Choi in the clubhouse and hopefully they can provide a little of the missing "grit" this team seems to suffer from.

Well, SD is completing a deal to bring Rich Hill and Ji Man Choi in from PIT. Dont know who is going to PIT yet.
I would imagine that Hill forces Lugo back to the bullpen, which helps with his innings and strengthens the RP.
Choi doesnt do much for me.....buddy for Kim?
