Spring Training-

I watched a lot of FtWayne games on MiLB last year and the good news about Tirso is that he's back to how he looked in 2018, but that also is the bad news.  He's eye candy for scouts because of his build but still can't get to his power.  Hit a ton of doubles (31) at Hi A, but just 7 home runs - still an improvement over 2018 after a horrible 2019 and a lost 202o season.  Still has a great eye at the plate and moves okay on the bases but won't ever be more than an average, at best, outfielder which is why there was talk earlier that he might move to 1b.  Like his stroke, bat speed and patience but needs to show that power at San Antonio this year, which is where he'll probably be assigned.  Maybe some of those doubles will turn into home runs but San Antonio is a tough place to hit home runs - could look good on the road, however.

Thanks Randy.

I'd lost track of him. Glad to hear he's possibly back on track.

Another ST loss today but salvaged somewhat by the opposite field HR by Abrams and a couple of solid ABs by Merrill; Angeles got robbed of a certain double by a great defensive play at 3b.  Profar, Nola and Myers did not impress.

Pitching was mixed - Adams looked very good and more under control.  Paddack threw a lot of curveballs and I would guess 50% of them were pretty good, had a little bit of trouble with fastball location but change worked well-HR by Hiura was more wind-aided then that of Abrams.  Fillmeyer was efficient but none of his stuff looked special; Kerr had his moments but inconsistent.  Weathers showed he needs many more innings because he left too many good pitches in the zone and got hammered when batters connected.

Looks like Hiura is getting his stroke back.  Was an early possible suggested get by me but probably no longer a need since he can only play 1b or DH.

I think Kerr needs a little control work but man he has the “stuff”...could have just been nerves…..but I say give him Guerras roster spot.I think the Javy Guerra experiment has run its course. He just can’t get outs.

I like what I've seen from Taylor Kohlwey. He seems to have a good approach at the plate. Looks like he's been a really good AVG and OBP guy in the minors who is maybe held back by a lack of power.

Concur on Kohlwey.  Looks very poised.  Good contact and on base skills but little power and not a speedster, so hard to place at 1b or corner OF spot.  Can play a decent OF but not a CF.  For those reasons, his chances to get to and stay in the majors are limited.

Also concur on Kerr.  He had to strike out the first guy he faced twice because the ump missed the call.  Batters couldn't get good swings on his pitches.  Unless Castillo has come all the way back could be kept up until Pomeranz returns as the 2nd lefty in the pen behind Hill.

+1 on Kohlway … I would watch for him as a potential emergency call-up (added to 40 man) during the season if injuries take their toll on OF. Just seems poised with a nice swing. Not a lot of AAA coverage if there is a need for an OF. Also in he same category of “non-prospects” that may be emergency call-ups could be Azocar. Liked his showing in the first two ST games and he can pay CF (as a RHH) since defense is his main asset.

Early in ST … but Kerr probably has to lose a spot on the active roster. Hill is in but Pomeranz is IL, Morejon is IL, Castillo has to show he is healthy and is non-roster, Weathers is going to be stretched as a starter (probably in the minors), and Gore will stay only as a starter. That is it for LHRP options and going with two seems more of a minimum.

Depending on injuries and roster manipulation for RHRP … could see Hill, Kerr, and Castillo make the 26 man (or 28 man if they expand for he first month)>

I like Hinojosa also.

Obviously only seen a little but checking his Minor League numbers also he should be good depth for us down in AAA.

Darvish had a good 3 inning outing today … but it was against a Rockies team filled with second team / minor league types.

Was a bit surprised that they let Nick Martinez only go one inning when he came in (he looked fine). If he is in the running for the 5th SP thought he would have a greater pitch limit.

Only the 5th.

The box score is showing it was Adrian Martinez brought in for the 4th, not Nick?
