Spring Training-

Caratini played with some minor leaguers against the Dodgers minor leaguers. Sounds like Gasser pitched well and Hassell and Mears looked good.

I only got to see part of the game today, but liked what I saw of Mazara; looked like he had decent bat speed.  Also, Tayler Scott threw some of the more wicked sliders I've seen this side of Lamet.  If he can keep his FB out of harm's way, then he might have a chance to make the team.

Just a comment on Voit, although he isn't yet in camp.   He is not just a pull hitter, but sprays those HRs all over the field with a lot of them going to right and right center.  That friendly porch in Petco might take a beating from him this year besides slamming a few off the Western Metal Building walls.

Well, it is the 4th and some early observations (mainly scrubs playing):

1. Campusano hits a HR but in his other AB looked bad striking out again … just wild swings

2. Abrams gets a hit (playing 2B) but struck out in his other vs a LHP

3. Knehr was OK (give up a HR)

4. Guerra not so much

Kim at SS … Caratini C

Guerra: 1 inning; 4 hits (1 HR); 3 runs.

I know the club … ever since Guerra was converted to a pitcher … keeps raving about his velocity and pitch movement BUT he seems to get hit HARD consistently. Out of minor league options … should be a early DFA.

Given his results, would not want him on the active roster even if they expanded the pitchers to begin the season.

Side: watched Norwood yesterday … no command … also out of options … the 2nd DFA candidate.

Abrams unloads a HR.

I guess we are only 2 weeks from ST camp breaking down … maybe Sunday April 3 although the Padres have a ST game scheduled for Apr 5 (maybe not a big issue since they open on the 7th in AZ).

EP starts on Tuesday the 5th … Padres Thursday the 7th … rest of the minors on Friday the 8th. Players have to get to their cities to find places to live and move.

A lot of minor league players are still around (especially pitchers) … have to suspect that the release process will start soon so the survivors get more playing time to get ready for the season.

Padres trotted out several pitchers who looked like they are at the end of their career with the Padres system - Guerra, Higgins, Camarena all were pretty awful.  Crismatt probably was the best of the group of Knehr, Crismatt and Scholtens but this was obviously near the bottom of the barrel of the pitching staff.

Liked what I saw of Abrams and Kim.  Campusano put a charge in one but still looked a little anxious at the plate.  Liberato had a decent game but not much more to see.  I expect we'll get the first round of cuts on Monday as teams start shaping up at the various levels of the minors.

Saw the little MLB Tonight clip today of Machado talking to brother-in-law Yonder Alonso; he looked really yoked!  Hoping he's completely over his shoulder injury.  Manny said that not having to shift so many times to RF side during a game will help keep his legs fresher.  He carried the team most of the year last year despite his injury - so hoping for an even better year this year!

Thanks Hester!

Any word on Tirso Ornelas? Any chance he mans LF any time this year in SD?
