Quote from fenn68 on March 16, 2022, 12:44 pmFriday’s game is on TV in SD … Gore is going to pitch / start.
Apparently with the short ST … we should see a lot of the regulars in the ST games coupled with the other players with the best chance of making the roster … probably not much of the “look / see” of minor league players.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 18, 2022, 8:19 amProbably reading way too much into it, but it's interesting to see Abrams starting with what is a mostly regular lineup in the first game.

In the same vein … Caratini is NOT included on the bench group (Alfaro is). Pending trade? Kim is also not on the bench … injured?
Could be as simple as starting Abrams - Campusano - Rosario gives the Padres a better early read on them in games … gives them some level of mental boost … and since the game is on TV in SD, an encouraging moment for the fans. Those three should get a lot of playing time in the spring so the Padres can better access their call-up readiness mid-season or push harder for alternatives.

Quote from fenn68 on March 18, 2022, 1:23 pmGore starting … could have escaped the 1st 1-2-3 at about 16 pitches but on a routine ground ball Abrams threw into the dirt about 8 feet in front of 1st base and Hosmer did his big sweeping stab and did not pick it.
Gore rebounded against Haniger and struck him out.

Quote from fenn68 on March 18, 2022, 1:40 pmGore’s second inning done … ground out - strike out - fly out.
Was around the plate in both innings and worked in - out, up - down … showed FB, slider, and curve.
Nice outing.

I'd actually like to see Alfaro and Caratini share catching duties this year.
Package Paddack, Nola, and maybe a reliever, for a warm body who can hold a bat and play the field.
Campusano HAS to be catcher number 1 in 2023.

Quote from fenn68 on March 18, 2022, 3:20 pmWell the catching sort will be interesting.
First impression on Campusano who started at DH … needs more AB in AAA. He was overmatched in his first two AB with little plate discipline.
Alfaro came in to replace Nola late in the game … 3 run HR.
Probably will see Caratini tomorrow.
I always worry about Nola at 32 and not built to carry a heavy load behind the plate … plus oft injured with the Padres. However, all the reports are that he is the best defensive catcher of the group and excels in his handling of the pitchers.
Since Melvin in on the record as seeing the catcher as defensive first, guessing Nola has the inside track (plus he can hit) but the back-up will be catching a lot (60-70 games). Depends who you talk to but Alfaro may be a bit better defensively that Caratini and offensively maybe a push (both with 2 years control and in the $2-3MM range). As of now, Campusano lags both offensively and defensively.
The odd man out may be the one another team wants in a trade.
