Spring Training 2023

Will be interesting to watch Jordan Guerrero ... BIG RP with (or had) a big FB but was not overwhelming in his journey up the levels. Yet, think the Padres still saw enough to send him to the AZ Fall League and now invite him to ML camp (over may other options). He was Rule 5 eligible but not selected.

As I recall he had control issues ... but if that FB is still alive ... things come together at different time for some RP and we may get a surprise as a mid-season call-up.

The Bullpens in AAA and even AA this season might be as good as some MLB ones (minus closers..as even the worst of BPs have some sort of elite RP in that role at the mlb level)..

Lugo/Cosgrove/Baez/Jakob/Felipe/Castillo/ etc.. etc..

With Garcia /Crismatt/Yu and Lugo amongst others in WBC our pitching Depth both BP and SP in Spring training should get lots of "showcase" opportunities to impress aka earn spots be it on the 26 or the pecking order of call ups ...One positive of the WBC

Position wise same with our entire infield and one COF in the WBC except Jake...

One guy playing in WBC who may get hurt (as in losing his place in the pecking order) is C- B. Sullivan(Italy)... as Severino, Fernandez and Seagle will get more reps with our Pitchers in Camp in his absence.. then again if he rakes in WBC maybe helps his spot on the Depth Chart..

Not out of the realm of possibility that Jackson Merrill plays himself into AA ball as well

I see a lot of ST work for Severino given his MLB history and the concern about Campusano's performance and a Nola injury. He could be in the best position to be the backfill on a contender. Nola may be eased into the regular season with minimal ST work ... given his experience, age, build, and injury risk. On the other hand should see a lot of Campusano.

The other options will get the playing but likely for positioning behind Severino and Sullivan in the order and maybe even staying in AAA.

With all the WBC players out ... and Rosario injured ... ST early may be an audition for EP among a long list of non-prospects / veteran MiL players. Not really any high profile prospects coming out of AAA/AA.

Interesting in its own right but not compelling in shaping the 2023 Padres.

Yu leaves for Japan on Sunday.. he will be the only player NOT reporting to ST until after the WBC.. He just said that in his presser.. I dont like this from a potential Nola injury as he will only have 2 weeks work at most with Campy and others if any (Nola) at all ramping up to opening day..

Everyone else I believe is in camp until March 3rd or so ..

Should be a good opportunity for Shrock in particular, LHH that can play INF/OF. Still a little intrigued by him.

This is pretty huge for Groone and how AJP and Padres feel about him.. +2 mph since coming over from Boston 👍

A solid-average fastball that averages 93 or 94 is a huge difference from a fringy 91 or 92. If his slider actually plays as plus he could be a solid #5. I will be extremely excited and surprised if he can give us 100 or more inning of a 4.00 to 4.50 ERA

Through Groome's season last year, he did pitch 144 innings. So he should; baring injury, be able to give SD as many innings as his performance will justify.

And considering that Manaea over 158 innings pitched to a 4.96 ERA, and it was much worse in the 2nd half, the bar is not that high for Groome to surpass the effort from Manaea.

Manea also had the highest road ERA in baseball amongst SP .. the Manea bar is very low

Home 6-3 3.62

Road 2-6 6.16
