The lineup the Padres put out on Twitter has Honeywell starting. The MLB app shows Teheran. We'll see what happens. They'll probably both pitch regardless.

MLB also changed to Honeywell. Still pulling for him but he has an uphill fight to keep his spot on the 26 man. Needs a good outing over 3 IP. If can minimize hard contact, rest of his game has been okay to date.

It's a double edged sword with Honeywell.
If he pitches well and we can't find a roster spot we will lose him.
Best thing (for the Padres) is that he doesn't pitch "too good" and he slips through waivers and he then proceeds to kick ass in AA/AAA.

Not sure what you meant by not "too good" but getting 5 of 6 outs by swinging strikeouts sandwiched around a 2 run HR might measure up to that kind of definition.

Well,too good to slip through waivers but not good enough to make him an obvious choice for the Opening Day rotation.
At this point it seems like Yu/Snell/Wacha/Martinez/Groome/Teheran to me.....with Groome headed to AA/AAA when Joe returns.
Although,won't we owe Teheran $6 mil if/when he makes the major league roster?
So maybe for that reason Teheran starts in AA/AAA?

Tim Lopes is having a terrific spring. With a two-run single in the 2nd inning, he's hitting .467 in 30-at bats. Also has 1 homer, 7 RBI, and 6 stolen bases.
Lopes has played a little bit of outfield before, too. He's only played infield so far with the Padres.

Can't see a world in which Dixon or Batten beat Lopes for a 40 man roster spot at this moment

Maybe part of the Honeywell / Teheran decision is the Padres’ view how well they an work out of the pen after Musgrove returns.
Teheran would get a pro-rated ML salary (I guess) when he is called up and whatever they agree on as his minor league salary when in the minors. The grey area is if (when) does he have an opt out if added to the 26 man. Padres have to decide if Teheran is better than the options to the extent of paying a $6MM salary. Add that Teheran would be a FA after the season.
Honeywell is near league minimum and controlled for six years … plus from what I saw today he will not get through waivers … he had the command and clear swing and miss stuff … better than a lot of 13th pitcher on a lot of ML teams.
Groome is looking good but has minor league options … and if they want preserve as many good arms for the full season … Groome gets stashed in AAA unless there is some house cleaning in the pen (maybe Pomeranz / Morejon on the IL).
Two+ weeks against stronger line-ups may make the decision easier.

Unless Lopes has an opt out of his minor league contract … no need to add him to the 40 man. At some point I expect Batten and Dixon to be DFA … just not for Lopes now. Keep them around until they need the 40 man slot (maybe Dahl, maybe Teheran, maybe Severino, maybe ??? … it is a long season)
Then at the end of the season make a call before he goes FA.

Teheran getting hit hard this outing and the last inning of his last outing. Maybe the warts are starting to show or it could be a "dead arm" period for someone who hasn't pitched much in the last couple of years. Groome, right now, is definitely ahead of both Teheran and Honeywell; Morejon likely will be on IL for awhile.

If the decision comes to Honeywell vs Teheran.. I am 💯 on Honeyewell's corner ..he looked sharp today - the HRs.. a lot of swing and miss in that arm
? About Honeywell say he makes the 26 and is pitching well but approaching 60-75IP which I would say is his limit based on past yr 1/2 usage... can the Padres place him on 60 day IL at that point? Or how does a team handle a P out of innings for the purpose of protecting their Health?
