Spring Training 2023

Musgrove threw a bullpen today and seems to be doing everything in his power to avoid starting the year on the IL. Musgrove is reportedly hoping to be back for the first game in ATL. That's the 7th game of the season.

Pomeranz is supposed to throw a sim game on Thursday and could make his spring debut over the weekend. If they're both on the 26 man to start the year I think our pitching is pretty set. Groome vs Wilson would be the only real question for me. I think they'll both probably be up and down quite a bit this year.

As far as Honeywell and Teheran are concerned I think you have to try to send both of them to the minors. If Honeywell gets claimed or Teheran wants to go somewhere else so be it. They would be nice to have around, but I don't think either of them has shown enough to carry at this point.

Wouldn't rule out Honeywell and/or Teheran gaining the 12th/13tth slot even after Musgrove returns. Appears to be a good chance Morejon and Pomeranz start on the IL ... so when Musgrove returns:

SP (6): Musgrove; Darvish; Snell (L); Wacha, Martinez, Lugo

RP (5 ... safe): Hader (L); Hill (L); Suarez; Garcia; Crismatt

Not sure any of the RP contenders for those last two slots have have clearly established leadership ... and really only Groome is making a case but is being groomed as a SP.

If there is not great separation between Honeywell / Teheran and the other contenders (who have minor league options) with the understanding that more injuries are likely over the season of 162 games do the Padres make moves to preserve the most pitching for the season. Remember if they are not effective at any point they still can be DFA and one of the other contenders can be called up. 162 game depth has to be a consideration or we see the return of Jake Arrieta.

Like what I've seen of Cronenworth at the upper part of the line-up.  Noticed that Melvin's line-up typically has players who will be batting in the same order but not necessarily at the current spot in the line-up.  For example, in today's game, you have Grisham, Tatis and Croney as 1-2-3; likely when Tatis gets back, you'll have Grisham down at the bottom of the line-up at #9 and then Tatis and Croney as 1-2.  Before lot of guys left for the WBC, you could see some of that same kind of batting order positioning.   How will it look to start the season?  Possibly platoon Grisham and Kim at the #1 spot, followed by Cronenworth, Machado, Soto, Bogaerts, DH spot, Kim or RF, c spot, Grisham or RF.  When Tatis comes back, then you go Tatis at the top, the same next 5, Kim, catcher, Grisham.  If  we get Grisham to hit at least .240, Kim and Croney to hit around .265 with some power and our catcher spot is not a black hole, this is going to be a very tough line-up for any pitching staff to face.  Others like Soto as #2 in front of Machado; I'm sure Melvin can figure it out!

Voit has an opt out effective now if he is not added to Brewers 40 man.. he can play out the Spring and see what happens, but as of midnight last night (since he wasn't added to 40) can opt out at any time.. 28 AB and he is crushing it in ST..

By the way I spoke with Cole Hamels briefly when I was in Peoria.

I said "Well, you finally made it to the Padres...we've been waiting for you!"

He just smiled knowingly....lol

Does anyone know what happened to Wilmer Font?  He was supposed to compete for a spot in the rotation but I don't think he's been in a game this spring and I've not read anything about him being in camp?  Injury?

I think he pitched ..either an A game a B game or BP.. cause I remember a blip about it..but very little..

Outside of Teheran the NRI guys have really not gotten much work. Maybe they're just keeping them busy working on the backfields. Maybe they're just not that good. I've been wondering about Font too, but I knew nothing about him until MLBTR wrote up his signing. If they hadn't I wouldn't have even noticed his absence.

Well, Font is still on the EP roster ... has not pitched in a "A" game ... maybe some minor injury or just not good enough to get into the queue of non-roster pitchers getting an inning or so.

Nice season in Korea but at age 32 and a very unimpressive set of runs in MLB ... probably was added as a shot in the dark and some AAA support.

I thought Tatis wasn't going to play today, but he's currently listed in the starting line-up.  That's an intimidating line-up irrespective of what the batting order is!  This is especially true if the strong spring training showings of Cronenworth, Kim and Grisham continue into the regular season.

Important outing for Honeywell.  If he can continue that swing and miss and not give up too many hard hit balls, could be a lock for that long man/6th starter.
