Tim Lopes doing Tony Gwyn impersonations at the plate this ST.. may force Batten and/or Dixon off the 40 man roster if not make the 26 at this point..
Also heard Groome could be long relief/spot 6th SP to begin the season, since he has long outstanding
Also wonder if Crismatt strong ST and WBC start becomes a trade chip soon (out of options) with Weathers/Morejon/Groome all profiling as =>alternatives and lefties to boot...all 3 WITH options. Maybe we can steal a top 10 NYY prospect or a Golden ticket down the line from the Bronx Bombers for Nabil.. who can at worst bridge the SP gap between opening day and when some of their injured dudes comeback and at best be their 4th/5th SP

As for my boy Salas .. I'd like to see him get 20 ST ABs before making a decision as to where he starts.. part of me wants to start him in organized ball (aka LE) right away, then move him to AZ when league opens to refine areas of concerned.. OR if he is doing well keeping him in LE or even pushing him to Ft Wayne if he is tearing it up at LE.. Merrill 💯 should skip A+ and go straight to AA.. Zavala at A or A+ depending as to what the org is seeing from him...
Howell intrigues me from the AAA gang.. so far so good from him/ Liberato/Kholwey, still have faith in Ornelas as well.. although I feel like the 3 I mentioned above are solidly ahead of him atm...
Groome/Weathers have really shown off good.. and feel even better about our P depth than I did before..
Severino has a Canon and if Campy's hamstring lingers, we may never find out what Campy could be ..
Also Mortadella has looked very comfortable in his few chances

Reading Cassavall's piece on the Padres pitching for opening day, he seems to think:
SP: Darvish, Snell, Wacha, Martinez, Lugo
RP: Hader, Suarez, Hill, Garcia, Crismatt (Melvin seems to have locked him in)
That leaves 3 lots under the assumption Musgrove begins on the IL. He seems to see Groome the leader for the open 6th SP (or the pen) pending his work as ST move to the more difficult phase as ML regulars get it going.
His comments on Pomeranz led me to believe we could see Pomeranz on the IL to start the season as he continues back to full strength. Maybe some more time in extended and a rehab run later in April.
Not looking good for Lopez and implied that Wilson could be at risk of being optioned.
That background could open some opening day opportunities on the LH side for Morejon, Weathers, and Castillo (v Pomeranz) and on the RH side Honeywell or Teheran (v. Wilson).
Guess this will go down to the wire.

Lugo had an excellent 4 inning stint today … Azocar continues to hit out of the CF slot.

Morejon pulled from the game after getting pounded … apparent injury … could be the 13 man pitching staff is beginning to get shaped by injuries.

Side … prospect to watch … Jakob Marsee. A 6th round pick last year, 21 year old OF out of Central Michigan with great plate discipline resulting in a very high OBP and BB > K. No power and just average defensive skills.
What makes be highlight him is that he is getting a lot of time in ST games … more than you would expect for a 2022 draftee who barely made low A last season. Maybe the Padres see more in him now that he is in the fold. Maybe only a potential 4th OF in a few years … but maybe more of a prospect than we would project as a 6th round college pick.

Tucker vs Dahl vs Azocar vs Engel vs Kohlwey and others is shaping up to be a bloodbath for 2 spots to start ..been impressed by Tucker patience and today he went deep

Today's ST game has Manaea against Teheran. Ironic on so many levels, since Teheran is one of those trying to take Manaea's place in the rotation. We'll see how the season plays out and whether the decision not to pursue Manaea, especially for what he signed for with the Giants (25M over 2 years), was the correct one. I'm pretty sure the Padres believe it was given Manaea's collapse during the latter part of the 22 season and in the playoffs.
