I am not watching the game, just following on game day, did Arraez just got thrown out at 2nd before Díaz scored? If so, that would be a bonehead play on him, Wouldn't?

Diaz slowed way down on his way to the plate. He would have scored easily if he hustled the whole way. Arraez just barely got thrown out. I don't fault him for the aggressiveness. It's inexcusable on Diaz's part.

Clearly Diaz should have been running all out but will not let Arraez off the hook. Not a fast runner ... ball hit to RF so had a view of the OF making the play ... two outs and the hit would put Tatis at 3B ... Machado your RBI guy coming up ... if he made 2B, good chance they walked Manny. For me all that adds up for him not to be aggressive in that situation. Then layer on a bit of criticism for Manny ... the on deck hitter normally communicates to the runner ... eg stand, slide ... and should have been yelling at Diaz to hustle.

However, the #1 is Diaz unaware of the situation and deciding to slow down.

This is why the Padres paid big for Miller ... clutch situation against a playoff contender ... K's Soto ... K's Alonso.

And on top he pitches a scoreless 8th. Let's hope Suárez can close It up.

I NEVER get the non hustle thing in baseball. It's not very often these guys have to go all out in a run situation. Half dozen times per night, maybe? Not really asking a lot from supposed professional athletes.

The Padres are for the moment 1.5 games behind the Dodgers. The win tonight gives them home field advantage over the Mets if they finish the season in a tie with the Padres and play them in the playoffs, which is unlikely.

Pivetta pitched better than King. Pretty good considering the Mets are a tough team.

Now the Padres need to win the rubber match. Vasquez on the mound against a struggling Tong.

GO PADRES!

Dodgers won. The Padres remain 2 games back.

Game 3 Lineup
1. Tatis RF
2. Arraez 2B
3. Machado 3B
4. Merrill CF
5. Laureano LF
6. Sheets DH
7. O'Hearn 1B
8. Cronenworth SS
9. Ferman C

Vasquez P

Are the Pads the team that makes the most bad decisions running the bases? They gotta be.

The theory of being "aggressive" on the base paths is good BUT

it is great only if successful nearly all of the time

it is tolerable if successful most of the time and the failures are "close" plays

it is just bad if successful some of the time and the failures are not even close plays

Padres seem to be locked into option 3 ... the past two days the Arraez and Machado plays were not close at 2B and in both cases the runner had a clear view of how the fielder was approaching the play. Just bad base running decisions.

In today's blunder, if Manny did not try to get to 2B ... would have had Arraez at a 3B with one out and the teams hottest hitter in Merrill coming up with Manny on 1B. Not clear on what Manny was thinking (seeing) that made him want to make that gamble and getting thrown out but a mile.
