Vazquez did his job, a solid quality start allowing only 2 runs in 6 innings.  I'll take that everytime from him.  Manny hit career HR 159 with the Pads, he is only 2 behind Gonzo for 2nd all-time and 4 behind Nate Colbert in his quest to become the all-time Padres HR leader.  I didn't like Shildt using both Scott & Suarez in a game with a 4 run lead.   I would have went Matsui & Reynolds personally.  However, the Pads were only 1-9 in their previous 10 games in St. Lou, so I guess Shildt wasn't taking any chances tonight, going with his best.  Picked-up a half-game on both the Dog-ers & Snakes.  Go Pads!

They pitched Yesterday, so probably one If not both will be unavailable tomorrow, unless Shildt doesn't go with his MO, we'll see.

Yeh, a bit surprised both came in with that kind of lead but at this stage of the season locking down a win may more critical than over thinking the next few games. Locking a win in the first game of the road trip also sets a good tone.

Also, with Cease going today … followed by Musgrove and King … and STL not a great hitting team … Shildt may think they may not need them to end games in all the remaining three games. Also getting the sense Shildt is confident in Hoeing, Adam, Estrada, and Matsui in late innings situations.

Last nigth "Action" Jackson Merrill recorded his 75th RBIs this season passing Kevin Kouzmanoff's 74 RBIs for 2nd all-time for a Padres rookie and only needs 5 more to pass the All-Time Padres Rookie Record of 79, set by our last Rookie-of-the Year, C Benito Santiago.  More Merrill Madness!  It sure feels like he should win Rookie-of-the-Year!

Also, it is interesting that the Pads have 4 players with high 70s RBIs (can you say balance):

1. Profar with 79.

2. Machado with 77.

3. Merrill with 75.

4. Cronenworth with 74.

One other thought, where does Nando slot back into the lineup?

In my opinion, 2nd or 3rd.  Probably 2nd to balance righties lefties.

  1. Arraez
  2. Tatis, Jr.
  3. Profar
  4. Machado
  5. Croneworth
  6. Bogarets
  7. Merrill
  8. Kim
  9. Higgy/Campy

What does everyone else think about the future batting order once Nando & Kimmy return?  Go Pads!

Might a bit more difficult to set up but think you hit the line-up vs RHP … vs LHP might see Cronenworth down a bit and Bogaerts up (maybe more of Solano vs Croney). Cronenworth is struggling vs LHP and probably want to keep Solano’s bat sharp.

Hard to guess Shildt’s strategy given where the Padres stand down the stretch. On one hand we are assuming Tatis (after the layoff) is the old Tatis upon returning. If not … and considering the current success of this line-up … might they place Tatis differently in the line-up to break him back in?

The Padres win to take the first two games.

I like the odds of winning at least 3 games in this series with no-no Joe on the mound tomorrow and King on Thursday. He has been phenomenal allowing only 1 run in 3 starts since his return from the IL.

GO PADRES!

Looks like Bad Cease is back. Dude is 100% Jekyll and Hyde. Hopefully when postseason starts, he's back to being.....which one is the good one: Jekyll or Hyde?

Mason McCoy definitely the MVP of today's win- with his legs!

I'd never heard of him prior to last week. Another AJ minor league FA( count: Peralta, Solano, Estrada) that has helped this team win games.

Merrill, Machado, Cronenworth,  Profar- these dudes have just been consistently there all year. If FTJ can return as FTJ, and Kim, our O is stacked.

I really thought Bogaerts was getting  back to his Boston self upon his return.  Now not so sure. He's easily replacable. Shame since we're on the hook for another 8 years and $200 million.

Cease battled but couldn't locate his fastball tonight.  Quick hook by Shildt pulling Cease after only 4 1/3 innings, especially since he could have gotten a W with a couple more outs in the 5th.  Hoeing gave up a HR to Goldschmidt, causing the Pads to have to comeback for their 34th time this season.  Matsui, Estrada, Adam & Scott pitched solidly after Hoeing's & Cease's struggles.

Manny hit his 160th career HR for the Pads, now trails Nate Colbert by only 3 HRs for being the all-time leader for the Pads.  Profar & Crone Zone with a great at bats in the 7th, Profar with a deep sac fly and then Croney with a tough to 2 out hit after an 9 pitch battle.

Let's hope Java Joe gives a deeper outing tomorrow night to rest the pen some.  One would think the Scott is down for tomorrow for sure, since he has pitched 3 games in a row.  Go Pads!

Both Dodgers and Dbacks lost. The Padres move up to 3 games back of the Dodgers and a 2nd place ties with the Dbacks.

Padres lose.

Two outs in the bottom of the 9th and Suarez blows it giving up 3 straight hits for the loss. Why is the 3rd out almost always the hardest?

Let's take game 4 for the series and season series.

GO PADRES!
