The Padres hit the road and head to St. Louis to face the Cardinals in their final 4-game series of the regular season and end the road trip facing the Rays. The Padres lost 2 of 3 to the Cardinals at Petco back in early April. This is another team the Padres have always had a tough time beating. It has always been much tougher at Busch Stadium than at Petco. In 2021 and 2022 the Padres were swept by the Cardinals in 2023 lost 2 out of 3. I hoping it will be different this time.

This season the Padres have played better on the road than at home, but will face tough Cardinals pitching as well as former Padres Tommy Pham and Matt Carpenter, and will not face C Willson Contreras, who is on the IL. The Padres have scored 93 runs more than the Cardinals and lead MLB in batting average.

Vásquez has been recalled and has been struggling since the AS break. Let's hope he is solid min his start in Game 1.
Cease is coming off a tough start, but allowed only 3 runs(2 ER). He has a 1.71 ERA in his last 9 starts.
Musgrove has been amazing since coming off the IL and pitched 7 shutout innings allowing only 1 hit in his last start. He has a 0.57 ERA in 3 starts since coming off the IL. He has been phenomenal.
King is coming off a tough outing giving up only 3 hits, but one bad pitch that resulted in a grand slam and a pitch that resulted in a dumb luck hit that struck 3rd base bouncing away from Machado. Otherwise, he pitched a solid game. He has a 2.79 ERA on the road.

GO PADRES!

Vasquez is getting the start tomorrow.

I hope the Mets are as tough with the Dbacks as they were this weekend.

I hope so, too. I also hope the Orioles prevail against the Dodgers.

The Padres can gain 1/2 game on Monday because both Dbacks and Dodgers are off.

No “right” answer but interesting debate on whether it is better for the METS get crushed by AZ, SD wins v STL and effectively eliminate the METS (the only real candidate to bump the Padres out of the playoffs) before SEP 1. Frees up the Padres to set-up the roster during SEP for the playoffs and the final 3 games vs. AZ.

OR have the METS crush AZ, SD wins v STL and move in a stronger position for the first WC slot while keeping the METS 4-5 games behind the Padres with time running out.

If the Padres go on a winning streak … things are fine but what is best if the Padre struggle a bit … maybe just .500 going forward?

Think Fangraphs has the Padres’ chances to make the playoffs at about 95% now … so if the Padres just are above water for the rest of the season should be in.

If the Padres can get a split with St. Louis and win the TB series, I think we'll be okay no matter what happens between Arizona and the Mets.  Padres' focus has to be one game at a time - almost one inning at a time - and not scoreboard watch.

Bachar sent right back down to get Vasquez back on the roster. Too bad he didn't get the chance to make his debut, but maybe he'll still get a shot before the end of the year.

True, although him pitching would mean a blowout either way, so maybe It was for the best, I saw him warming up with Reynolds before the game, he looked excited :).

Vazquez did his job, a solid quality start allowing only 2 runs in 6 innings.  I'll take that everytime from him.  Manny hit career HR 159 with the Pads, he is only 2 behind Gonzo for 2nd all-time and 4 behind Nate Colbert in his quest to become the all-time Padres HR leader.  I didn't like Shildt using both Scott & Suarez in a game with a 4 run lead.   I would have went Matsui & Reynolds personally.  However, the Pads were only 1-9 in their previous 10 games in St. Lou, so I guess Shildt wasn't taking any chances tonight, going with his best.  Picked-up a half-game on both the Dog-ers & Snakes.  Go Pads!

Yes, Vasquez his job. Machado, 2 for 4,  1 HR, double and 3 RBI and Merrill 2 for 4 and 3 RBI.

Let's take game 2. Cease on the mound.

GO PADRES!
