Quote from Brian Connelly on August 11, 2019, 11:34 amQuote from fenn68 on August 11, 2019, 8:45 amReason for optimism ... since how the Padres are playing vs how their competitors are playing is critical ... consider the 2nd half of this season, so far for NL teams:
Offense: 4th in WAR .... 3rd in wRC+
Defense: 3rd in dWAR
Relief Pitching: 1st in WAR .... 1st in xFIP (by a long shot)
Starting Pitching: 9th In WAR ... 11th in xFIP
Considering SP is the near term strong suit of prospects ... closer to contending than the current record suggests. Of course, need continuation of these results over a full season which is alway iffy.
Also, as much as we focus on the negatives we see in the current Padres’ play and players, we are vastly underestimating the faults in other teams .... apparently as bad or worse.
Good "step back" perspective, FENN! Granted it's against the Rockies, but things are starting to click; Mejia & Urias are beginning to roll, the Naylor up call is paying off, Margot just looks like a different guy, Renfroe might have slump-busted...
... this even with Machado on one of longest hitless streaks in his career. Surprised RP THAT good, but Munoz + Baez way > who they replaced... promising!
When you look ahead to next year's team... there are not a lot of holes. But without adding a SP, are banking very heavily on G. Richards & Gore to "lead" a playoff caliber team... I think that ask is high.

Quote from fenn68 on August 11, 2019, 12:06 pmIt looks as though the pre-season forecasters and the continued focus by Preller on improving SP was the right analysis.
Preller has not gone off that desire to add a top of the rotation veteran to lead this staff ... not easy to do. Preller, if he is going to achieve that, he has to tread the needle on preserving his elite prospects (probably only Gore - Patino - Abrams - maybe Edwards) and then packing at least a four pack of next prospects if the objective is multiple years of a top of the rotation arm. Maybe substitute a MLer(s) in the mix.
Hard to think of the options that are (will be) actually available for trade ... let alone the ask. Also hard to guess the payroll flexibility for taking on a contract (issue in FA to be sure). Probably why Preller has not been able to strike any deal for quality SP.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 11, 2019, 1:56 pmI realize the Rox are slumping right now but how good has our starting pitching been lately?
Quantrill and Lamet are getting me excited for 2020.
Paddack-Lamet-Lucchesi-Quantrill-Lauer is looking pretty good and that’s not even considering Richards,Morejon,Baez,Gore, and Strahm who are all options for the opening rotation.

Was really hoping Tatis could run his streak into the 20’s.
He needs everything he can get to possibly win ROY.

This one has East Coast Bias written all over anyway, so good chance he doesnt win it, I do think he might needs a couple days off

Edwards joined the Padres at the Trade Deadline in the deal that sent left-hander Brad Wieck to the Cubs. He spent 10 days at Triple-A El Paso before he was recalled ahead of Sunday's game against the Rockies. In a corresponding move, the Padres optioned righty Gerardo Reyes.
... and promptly had a bad outing (at least on paper, I did not see it, did you?)

Quote from fenn68 on August 12, 2019, 7:49 amSome more reasons for optimism (small sample size warning) .... consider the POST-ALL STAR game production for the "kids" under control for 5-6 years:
Tatis (20) ... 117 AB .... 308/364/564 .... holding production after the league has had a chance to adapt to him
Naylor (22 just turned in June) ... 38 AB ... 316/372/684 ... getting the playing time and beginning to show his potential plus in the games I watched he had a lot of hard hit balls that were outs
Urias (22 just turned in June) ... last 7 games ... 300/391/350 ... most notable is his high BB rate / low K rate, could be rising to his projection
Mejia (23) .... 69 AB ... 377/411/594
Margot (24) ... 81 AB ... 272/392/556 ... plus playing elite defense
Five sub-25 year olds showing in the ML what their projections had hoped. Don't expect these production levels to hold but a sign they could settle into legit ML bats (maybe even above average).

He looked OK to me.
I can tell you his first walk(could have been Walk #2?) the Ump called Ball 4 on an obvious strike.
Wasn't even close.
May have changed the entire inning.
His stuff looked pretty good though IMO.

He looked out of sync to me. Can't blame the ump, the guy throwing the ball owns the three ball count.
His arm is behind his body in the delivery sequence. Losing leverage and forcing him to subconsciously focus on catching up vs control, which was his problem yesterday.

I was half watching, but he looked wildly off /out of sync; reminded me of a low A guy just no harness on his mechanics; pitches 2-3 feet off plate... Obviously Pads were going to look at him, but a little dismaying he's been SO bad in 2 outings... did they rush the recall? Maybe should have let him settle in a little more @ El Paso?
He's in the exact same boat as Reyes & Stock but with way more MLB experience under his belt. No choice for Pads but to keep sending him out there in low leverage situations...
