They rolled the dice on Hand and Yates off the scrap heap and that worked well. Of course the list of failed pick-ups is longer but the Padres are still in the position in their pen to justify these types of gambles.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 13, 2019, 7:57 amI didn't see last nights appearance.
It took Luchessi 2 hours to get through 4 innings and I couldn't make it any longer.
Looks like I didn't miss anything good.

Precisely. Edwards deserves a longer leash. He's got a really solid track record before this season and we're not headed to the playoffs. May as well see if Balsely can tune him back into something productive.

Quote from fenn68 on August 13, 2019, 2:53 pmFrom an interview with Green today ....
1. Quantrill has no inning limit this season
2. Paddack will pitch to the end of the season (no early shutdown) under the same every 6th day concept .... made possible by off-days and some “spot starts” effectively mimicking a 6 man rotation. I guess IF Paddack really starts to struggle ... that may change but for now that is the plan.
Hopefully that sets them up for being workhorses in 2020 .... expect they will have to be a little controlled with Lamet and Richards next season. IF Lucchesi and Lauer are back they should be conditioned to go full bore.

Quote from fenn68 on August 13, 2019, 4:38 pmEdwards to the 10 day IL ... strained pitching shoulder. Erlin recalled.
I think that leaves only Reyes, Margevicius and Guerra as “healthy” 40 man roster pitchers if they need another call-up.
Stock, Nix, Avila, and at some point Richards are in rehab assignments ... maybe be an option before Sept 1.
Pitching is going to be a struggle.

Especially for SP. I think Paddack has a max of 5 starts left before Pads shut him down for season. Could be as few as 3, which barely gets to Sept plus some bullpen games along the way.
Really counting on the IL guys getting healthy, which we've learned is don't count chickens till they hatch exercise

Per Green, they are not "shutting down" Paddack ... rather using off days and bullpen days (or a spot starter) keep him on a every 6th day schedule. That should also help all the other arms since looking as though all could use a lower workload.
I just can't expect any of the IL types to be ready to return and assume a full workload ... if they return at all. Probably makes the return of Margevicius more probable (spot start / long relief) and everyone else work the pen to ease the workload there. More bullpen days.
Since he is on the 40 man roster ... healthy ... out of options in 2020 ... and throwing effectively in A+ with upper 90s velocity ... shortage of healthy arms at the ML level .... maybe we see Guerra called up for LE to get a ML view of his potential. Really as a RP needs just that upper 90s FB and a second pitch to be useful (effective) in one inning bursts. The added both Baez and Morejon sooner than expected (and needed roster slots to do so) ... Guerra should be an easier move.
Next 6 weeks should be interesting when it comes to all the pitching decisions.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 14, 2019, 1:38 pmSorry FENN, obviously missed your prior post re Paddack going all season. When I pencil that out, it looks like 7 more starts = 27 on the year & somewhere around 145-150 innings. Maybe pushing it a little, esp for team that likely totally out of it by late Sept.
But it's true that the SP's off all or most season long injuries probably not going 5 IP Starts either... we'll see.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 14, 2019, 4:29 pmSure would be nice if the entire offense was hot together for a month or even a week.
Only 1b and SS have been consistent this season.
As a matter of fact....who would have thought 3 weeks ago that our most productive positions would be C,2B and CF?
For 3 1/2 months those 3 positions were far and away our weakest spots....now they’re producing and we’re getting nothing from 3B and the corner OF spots.
