Another great pitching decision by Andy Green........Wingenter Again 🙁

Just a terrible Manager but he will spin it to make it sound like we won

We may be getting to the point in the season where Padre RP really takes a hit ... last night an example ... but they are not going to over-use Munoz, Morejon, or Baez to protect their arms since their have never pitched mega innings in the minors ... Wingenter is still on the young development track ... Perdomo is hit and miss ... then Stammen is just being over worked.

Why the pen may get less productive is that so far this season the Padres SP sits 13th in the NL in innings pitched which in turn sends the Padres RP to 4th in innings pitched. A menu for RP burnout.

Should note that this to a degree is a MLB issue with SP now on average going 5 1/3 innings and RP being used early and often. For the first time in a very long time (if ever) 2019 is having SP with better ERA than RP. The current thinking of don't send the SP a third time through the line-up combined with throw all out / don't worry about command and we will get you out of there just requires RP to be over-used, burn out, and there just is not enough of quality to cover the pens of 30 teams.

Some of that may have led the Padres to keep Lucchesi in the game for the 7th (only around 80 pitches) even though it was the 3rd+ time through. Lost all command to load the basis. Could be argued that he should have been pulled and start the 7th with a RP ... if you had any confidence in any of the 7th inning options.

Oddly, with all the RP concerns going forward ... in the past 30 days ... the Padres pen was 2nd in the NL in ERA and tied for 1st in WAR. That should say a lot about the rest of the league more than the Padres pen.

=====

Could be why the Padres were (and continue to be this winter) on the hunt for a veteran SP that can go deeper into games to at least every 5th start give the pen a blow. Hopefully such an arm with the current crop of kids developing in a way that can allow them to go deeper into games. Just cutting one inning of a RP every day really resets the mix in the later inning with fresher RP.

Given that logic ... a bit worried about the future of Lucchesi and Lamet ... neither seem to have all that good command and burn through a lot of pitches through 5 innings. So, far, Quantrill looks to have better command, Paddack clearly does, and even Lauer (even though his consistency is in question).

Posted this before, but will reiterate, Lamet is high leverage RP not an SP.

Hey, maybe the team will tank enough the rest of the way so that AJP will have a top ten pick next June.

Actually I think they dont have to tank that much, they have a top 10 pick as of now

Yup, I just noticed that today... uggh.

Uggh? I say "awesome!"  Lost year by now. What's the difference? Imagine adding another CJ Abrams or Ryan Weathers to the mix. Still poised to make a big push next year with a strong off season.

So, some life coming from Myers. In the last 30 days he was hitting .267 and .353 OBP. The last 7 days he has hit .435 and .480 OBP with a HR and 3 doubles. Is he coming around? Could be nice if he returns to form. Then he either benefits SD on the field or becomes a viable trade option that could net us a nice return AND salary relief. Still dont think someone is going to take all of the contract, but if he performs well down the stretch, maybe we can get $.50 on the dollar.

No idea why he was in such a deep slump or how he turned so sharply ... strange part of baseball. Given his history, would expect (and be OK with) him just settling into his "norm" which is about a .790 OPS ... maybe 30 HR / 30 SB.

If he does, not sure he is the target for being moved .... right now the OF of Naylor - Myers - Renfroe seems to be in place with Margot (and his difficulty with RHP) is the 4th OF against LHP / defensive replacement.

All four have "issues" and may not be the ideal for a contending team's OF. Renfroe's power and defense probably keeps him secure over the other three but Margot may be more at risk to be moved than the others with Jankowski as a LHH / plus defense in CF in the wings (go in CF with Myers / Jankowski in 2020). There are a few teams that would see Margot (and his potential) an upgrade to their CF situation. Then Naylor has to hit ... guessing his defense will not keep him around. So, until some internal options show up (and show they can perform) Myers may be safer than expected (his versatility ... abused as it is ... and the contract).

If the Padres still want to focus on adding a veteran, innings eater, top of the rotation SP (good luck) ... that may take out the key trade chips .... so trading for an impact OF is not likely (if they could really find one on the market). Then it is waiting for the potential of Olivares and Trammel to emerge as ML impact (2021?).

Looks like AG will continue his ridiculous OF rotation! Whilst it's nice to see young Naylor get some AB's in the big leagues, an OF of Myers, Margot/Jankowski and Renfroe just makes so much more sense on EVERY level- R/L split, defense, speed.

Myers in CF is just ATROCIOUS yet there's obviously something bigger at play here. For the life of me though I can't figure out what it is.

Naylor must have pictures of somebody and why Andy Green left him in after such a bad swing almost broke his back leg.  I was surprised he finished his at bat....although it consisted of just watching the next pitch.

I agree with you WUK....Jankowski makes so much more sense unless he just isn't healed up enough but c'mon....Naylor is in over his head....again
