Either Margot and Janikowski would be great to pencil in the 9 hole on a daily basis.

The righty / lefty platoon would be great as both have good wheels and play solid defense.

The one thing I love about Margot over anybody is that on a fly ball that he isn't running down but actually has a chance to camp on .....he always uses two hands instead of this hot dog one hand crap and is always behind the ball and moving forward and catching the ball about chest to shoulder high....that is just really good fundamentals. Always in a good throwing position

Watch him sometime....that is how you want to teach little kids the right way to play outfield

Now that trading players on ML contract is off the table until after the World Series, Padres should have an issue coming with a DFA before the end of the season.

Two open slots on the 40 man and three 60 day IL on rehab assignments looking to be added back to the 40 man in August ... Castillo - Richards - Nix. I guess with the other five on the 60 day ... with no recent updates ... they may make it to the end of the season before coming off ... but then they need to be accommodated (or released).

Putting it another way, 6 of the 46 (roster and 60 day) will have to go right after the end of the World Series (think that is the day). Not sure if there is a tiny trade window between the start of trade opening and the initial 40 man set for the winter. Then a a few weeks the 40 needs to be tweaked if there are any players they want to protect from Rule 5.

Bit surprised the Padres did not find home for some fringe players via trade before the deadline passed (ones that may be DFA in the future) ... but expect they “know” their moves and just will wait until they have to make them. This situation should curtail any non-roster adds for the remainder of the season (unless a clear Rule 5 protect).

Just an interesting watch coming soon.

Personally surprised but the Padres recalled Naylor ... not Jankowski.

Not sure how that helps maximize the looks for Myers, Margot, Renfroe running out the rest of the season ... and I guess they are committed to keep bouncing Myers around from LF to CF. Or are they installing Myers in CF, starting Naylor for his LH bat, and using Margot as the 4th OF.

On the other hand, maybe they want to see offensively what they may really have in Naylor (or showcase his bat) to set up winter trades. I think they know what Jankowski brings to the team, so they may just wait on him until Sept.

IF Naylor hits well enough either he is a trade chip or Margot is a trade chip with a CF platoon of Myers and Jankowski. Padres love Naylor’s offensive potential, so need to bring it forward ... I guess.

I'm surprised too.  I was hoping to see how the young pitching would benefit, if at all, from consistently having a good defensive OF behind them.  Also, I hope you are mostly wrong on Wil being used heavily in CF for the same reason and also IIRC his offensive splits when playing LF vs CF are pretty dramatic; we already kinda know he's a headcase.  Plus, he is at least average if not better in LF, but is the CF equivalent of Franmil in RF.

Interesting, useless, data bit on BbR:  two of the players he is most like through age 27 are Padres classics Carmelo Martinez (loved that guy) and Kevin McReynolds.  Man, I bet the Pads would take Mac-like production for the balance of the contract.

Flashback to two of my favorites.

I guess in this mix ... maybe Renfroe gets his time cut in RF (still has issues with RHP) ... and Naylor gets RF time. If they put in Naylor against all RHP ... maybe they just alternate which RHH is out and move the defensive positions around.

I don’t really get it. Kershaw tonight and Naylor on the bench and likely no need for a defensive move.

LOL

Renfroe takes Kershaw deep for number 30 but now he may get his playing time cut in favor of Naylor ? I would hope that even Andy Green could figure out a way to keep Renfroe in the lineup

Naylor makes ZERO sense. Stupid move by AJ/AG.

They had a chance to solidify their OF for the first time in well over, what, year and a half? Myers in LF, Margot/Jankowski in CF, Renfroe in RF. Best defence/offense combo in our organisation.

No brainer.

Wingenter being recalled doesn't look very bright either! Sheesh!!! Grand slam then walk - welcome back.....

Its funny that there is guys like Bochy that really know when to take a pitcher out and when yo leave them in, and guys like Black or Green that almost every time they get it wrong, top of the 6th, oportunnity to add on, the pitcher spot is coming up, knowing that Luchessi sucks when he faces a line up for the 3rd time out and the top of the order is coming up in the bottom of the inning, and he doesnt pinch hit for him, and then in the bottom of the inning he waits until the situation is getting out of his hands and puts Wingenter in an awful situation even though he hasnt being lights out throughout the year, and obviously he gives up the big dinger
