Quote from Brian Connelly on July 31, 2019, 10:34 amI don't understand the "debate" of Naylor vs. Jankowski to be recalled?
Naylor needs to play every day & would simply disrupt the "settling in" of Myers & Renfroe in the corners now. Not like his pinch hitting is going to put us in the playoffs. I say let those guys play every day for now & bring Naylor back in Sept.
But for right now Jankowski seems obvious to me; not a strict platoon, but let's see what happens putting he/Margot up top in favorable pitching matchups, putting Tatis in front of Machado(!) It's obvious the HR or nothing offense has sputtered much of the year; needs a catalyst. Think Jankowski helps with that. Naylor may in future, but Myers needs to (keep) re-establishing not looking over his shoulder in LF.
Freddy up, Olivares to take his place in AAA, Trammell in AA.

You should be happy....it would appear that Renfroe is safe.
LOL
I'll be happy when the Padres win the World Series because Renfroe hits a game 7 bottom of the 9th walkoff HR
It's baseball...the stuff dreams are made of 🙂

A great dream! One that I share! And in my dream, he blows a Kurt Bevaqua kiss on his way around the bases 🙂

In yet another under-the-wire deadline deal, the Cubs traded right-handed reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to the Padres, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers tweets. The once-trusted setup man had clearly seen his standing with the organization slip, as evidenced by a recent demotion to Triple-A Iowa.
... CEJ seems like the *perfect* Balsley project!

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2019, 3:35 pmWieck seeming was that short stint match-up against LHH ... maybe not as useful if a team is trying to manage overuse of the pen plus as it stands he was behind Strahm, Erlin, Castillo, and if they keep him Loup. I expect Morejon to return to starting in 2020 (minors).
However, on the RHRP side ... Stammen is likely gone (but not a certainty) ... and Munoz, Baez are still in the development stages so maybe they are not ready to crank them up into a Stammen type role of 50% of the games. Edwards in 2017-18 did long innings (and did well).
RHRP (2020): Yates, Wingenter, Perdomo, Munoz, Baez ... Lamet or Quantrill (depending who starts and if they go with only two LHRP) and in AAA as a call-up G.Reyes, Stock. Adding Edwards to the first 5 and being able to flex Wingenter, Munoz, Baez, Lamet, Quantrill, Reyes to AAA and back might be effective ... and let us not forget the chance of injuries. Might have a pop up RP out of nowhere ... still might find someone in a wither trade ... but for now seems like a strategically good move even if it ends up failing .

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2019, 5:28 pmLooks like Wintenger is back up and Erlin is back down.
Edwards is rostered in EP.
Jankowski and Naylor are in the EP stating line-up tonight ... so no clue on which is recalled.

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2019, 5:50 pmNaylor showed almost nothing....bring Jankowski back up and lets see if this Margot/Jankowski platoon system thing will work. I don't expect much in the way of hitting from Jankowski but he has the one thing that even the best coaches, unless you are a track coach, cannot teach and that is SPEED.
Fred plays the game the right way and I look forward to his return after a bad break....literally in the Spring. His defense alone should be the difference between him and Naylor
Erlin back down is a bummer because I think he can be a very good piece to have but his last outing versus the Orioles was all over the place....Wingenter is such a Sybil type pitcher....he can change from great to what was that over the course of a couple pitches
Edwards is one I hope can get up and show what he can do for the Padres.....Wieck was no big loss

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2019, 7:00 pmA player like Jankowski only needs to hit .250 to be valuable because of his defense and speed.
Thats the difference between he and Naylor.
Naylor needs much more production to have the same value to this team.
Just one of the reasons I have always preferred fast, athletic, good defenders over all else.
