Unless there is a minor trade of a position player on the 25 man roster, clearing a spot for the Padres, options are somewhat limited ... might be why waiting until Aug 1 makes sense. Don't really see them DFA Kinsler and if not ... Unlikely to option Urias (need him to play in the ML) or DFA Garcia ... so do they option Reyes and let Myers and Renfroe get their time starting? If none of those fits, an IL by someone might or they just wait until roster expansion on Sep 1 ... the platoon still gets a month audition.
Sometimes the obvious is not simple.

I think that Reyes could deal with some AAA time. Work on some of the pitches that are giving him issues here in SD. Plus, he could also work on driving in guys without knocking it out of the park.
I wonder if there would be any benefit for him to start working on 1B glove and footwork. He definitely seems more like a 1B than an OF to me anyway.

Don't see the 1B option ... just not quick enough or agile enough for ground balls or bunts. He is safer defensively in RF.

With the announced trade we could be seeing a Jankowski call up and the best defensive team in the OF of Myers - Margot / Jankowski - Renfore ... that works for now. (although a dark horse move is Naylor instead of Jankowski)
Plus opens two 40 man slots ... Trammel is not a 40 man yet and does not need to be until winter 2020 ... so easy in the short run to get Castillo and Richards off the 60 day without other moves.

Assuming the big trade goes through... Here is what I hope we see Aug 1st on:
vs RHP: 1) Jankowski 2) Tatis 3) Machado 4) Hosmer 5) Renfroe 6) Myers 7) Mejia 8) Urias
vs LHP: 1) Margot 2) Tatis 3) Machado 4) Renfroe 5) Hosmer 6) Myers 7) Urias 8) Hedges
Not "strict" RH/LH platoon of C... but in general. Naylor Sept call up to get some AB vs RHP

Didn't we leave Franmil unprotected a few years ago? No one claimed him? If my reckoning is correct, not a bad return.

Yep, another question, was he ever a top 10 in our system? I remember last year when he got the call and started performing a lot of us were extremely surprised by it

Looks like Castillo and Richards are nearing return after their rehabs in LE yesterday.
Castillo pitched 1 inning .... struck out the side. He could be back sooner than later.
Richards got 57 pitches in ... he got hit but for a veteran the game plan is more focused on just getting the pitches in (and showing recovery the next day). He is more of an mid to end of August guy.
