Per Acee, Baez is also in Chicago today along with Morejon .. both could be added to the 25 man tomorrow .... forcing 2 off the 40 man (or to 60 day DL).

Looking as though the Padres are shifting gears to developing for next year. The offset moves should be interesting.

Also, G.Reyes sent down to make room for Urias who is starting today at 2B. A bit surprised optioning a RP for Urias today. I guess tomorrow we should see the two moves being a pitcher and a position player.

Deal afoot?

Both Baez and Morejon are audition moves for a trade

It’s really a shame that Tatis is slumping at the same time Margot is on a tear.

It would be amazing for them both to be getting on and running wild.

Maybe a couple of 40 man roster clearing trades for international bonus money

I will go with the idea that is the first step in clearing out the deadwood pitchers on the roster .... Stock, Wieck, Erlin ... or moving a FA to be in Stammen.

At this point neither Morejon or Baez would generate enough return to justify dealing them if Preller stays on point and is not seeking a veteran short term (less than 3 years). Plus if anyone was interested they are probably interested in the potential from scouting and an audition does not add or delete much. Putting them on the 40 man (if not ready) probably hurts dealing them if the adding team does not have 40 man roster room.

Of course, if they deal Yates ... they need bodies. Actually they need upgraded RP under any circumstances.

Could be ... if Maton can generate that kind of deal ... then Erlin, Wieck, or Stock should before the trade deadline and almost every contender wanting more help (insurance) in the pen. They don’t have to be good .... just better than a buying team’s alternative and all three do have some ML experience.

Of course, those three (and now G.Reyes) are in AAA, so Padres will still have to send down (or deal) some pitcher off the 25 man.

Also, likely one move will drop a position player ... could go a lot of ways with Kinsler being really redundant with the add of Urias (DFA and eat the contract?), Naylor (has the options), Myers (just because). Then think that Jankowski is coming off the 60 day  DL around the 22nd requiring a 40 man slot even if he stays in AAA.

Keeping with that theme, a good chance we see Richards, Castillo, and Loup off the 60 day near the end of August. More head will roll.

Small stuff but interesting to see how the front office view the players and options.

I don't think this is true at all

Interesting anecdote on Morejon (and Ona) at one time both were planning to sign with the Cubs, I forget why (might have been when they were declared legible) they didn't sign

Meatball time

Jankowski doesn't seem ready for callup at all ... 0-for-7 tonight in a game that the other hitters got 16 hits!

Since one report had Naylor being optioned to fit in Morejon .... that leaves a Renfroe - Margot - Reyes - Myers and the only OF rotation ... OK with that for now.

Then Green said Urias was is regular 2B going forward ... not taking out the other 3 INF out of the line-up on any regular basis .... Garcia and Kinsler are not going to see much playing time except as PH.

When Baez is added ... it should be a pitcher optioned - IL’d - DFA’d - traded. Allen optioned is the easiest move.
