Nothing wrong with the pitch that Reyes made. Low slightly off the plate, good pitch. Bad RFer. 95% of all true RFers in ML baseball make that catch. What, 5 of these runs are off bad plays by Naylor. Not his fault either though, only playing where his dumb ass manager put him.

Just giving him a few more starts before Jankowski returns.  Expecting Naylor to cover RF just isn't really fair IMO.

Logan Allen.  WHYYYYY do we need 7 SP plus one in pen on roster??     Messing up the development schedule for him & Quantrill to carry both in pen.  Seems like he would have been down if not for Lauer's bereavement.  L. Allen's 22, everyone,  and was rusty after a 16 day layoff between starts.... chillax

Ever since HS he was viewed as having elite hitting potential and basically has delivered by getting to AAA at a very young age. However, he was (is) a 1B and there is not future for that in SD or a DH and few expect that in the NL until the next CBA is completed. 1B/DH prospect don't generate much in the way of trade value.

What is not clear is how much of the decision to play Naylor any given day (over Reyes or Myers) is Green's or the front office analytic guys (at least in collaboration). The same question is there for putting him in RF vs. LF.

Across MLB and I suspect with the Padres ... managers no longer have unilateral control of the line-ups.

At least in the short run ... hopefully we see Jankowski up / Naylor down and at some point Naylor becoming a trade chip.

Couple of thoughts ... Padres have little to call up (of any quality) to replace Allen and Quantrill. Lauer should bump Allen down. The IL stints of Castillo, Warren, and Loup have hurt more than we initially thought by thinning out the options.

With Strahm in the pen for the remainder of the season ... looking as though Quantrill will settle into a starting role (Lucchesi - Lauer - Paddack - Lamet - Quantrill) and did hear an interview with Quantrill that he felt working out of the pen in the ML does a lot to make him a better SP down the road and that reminded me (being an old guy) of the way young pitchers got introduced to the ML ... RP first then evolve to SP. In this situation, being a RP in the ML is very likely to be better than a SP in EP/PCL. Quantrill appears to be more advanced than Allen ... so actually like the approach with him.

Allen is sort of on the bubble ... not because he is young (he was very good in AA last season) but his stuff requires excellent command which he does not have consistently. Just not sure where he should be placed to perfect his command. Most of us have harped on the PCL as not being the place to delelop pitchers. So, is Allen too good for AA and not good enough or the ML but AAA will do nothing (or hurt) his development.

If we had a AAA affiliate that played like Petco it would be much different......."to me".

Padres must think time in the ML pen is more valuable to Allen than starting in the minors at this point.

Still surprised it was at the expense of Erlin (instead of G.Reyes). Could signal Erlin is nearing his end as a Padre with only one more control year a clear DFA/non-tender candidate if not gone in a minor trade.
