I looks like the rotation is setting up for Lamet to start on Wednesday vs. SF making the pre All-Star rotation: Allen - Strahm - Lamet - Lauer - Paddack - Lucchesi - Allen. IF both Lamet and Allen have good showing ... might we see Strahm going to the pen for the 2nd half? He has matched his innings pitched in 2018 (75 majors/minors) and appears to be fading with ERAs of 3.09 in 5 April starts, 3.38 in 5 May starts, then 10.13 in 4 May starts.

All-Star break will help but he was going to be limited anyway, so why not make the move and potentially improve the pen where he was excellent.

Of course, Lamet and Allen need to show well (and maybe Quantrill) as starters in July. If not maybe a "rested" Strahm returns to starting  or at least at the point Paddack hits his limit but he is going well now so he should continue starting until the fatigue sets in.

Alright, at this point we clearly have only 2 options with Maton-1) Cut him, 2) option him if they believe ANYONE would give us anything in return at a later date after he once again performed well in El Paso.

He is obviously not a viable option at this point for us. I think everyone has seen enough.

Guessing the Padres wait to cut Maton (and I could add Stock) until they need a roster slot and they have a better (or at least better projection) option. Until then they are bodies that for now are better than the other options. (That is a problem ... but a problem that permeates all MLB).

Probably at risk as players come off the 60 IL and clearly in the offseason when the Rule 5 rosters are set in November.

As it stands the only healthy RP in AAA are G. Reyes and Erlin ... who were not that effective when up before (Diaz just went IL). They have some decent prospects who project well .... but may not yet be ready for prime time and adding them now to the 40 man would present a problem in retaining other options if they are not effective.

Munoz and Baez seem like future options but both are being used in a manage way in the minors to build up their innings .... don't really think they are being used as "every day" RP and without being able to pitch consistently consecutive days will not work in the ML pen. Looking as though Wilson might slide into the mix but just don't know enough about his stuff to sense if he is a ML option (yet).

Maybe Castillo and Warren return in July, that will force moves.

Who goes down this week when Lamet gets called up?

Good chance it is a SP that would not be used pre All Star break. Since Quantrill is apparently going tomorrow night,  he could be the odd man out but it could be Allen IF they decide a Lamet - Lauer - Lucchesi - Strahm combo to start the LAD series. If they made the moves now (after tomorrow's game) either should be eligible to return when (if) they need starters post break.

Actually, would not be surprised if both got optioned now ... one for Lamet and one to add either another RP (Erlin or Reyes) or for some flexibility, another position player (Pirela, France, or A.Allen). Might depend a bit on how the see has healthy / rested for the best mix for the final 4 games.

The FIRST game post ASB is July 12th, and there is a day off after a 3 game series, then 6 in a row.  So Pads can manage that stretch with 5 SP; IF the SP for the 1st & last game of the 6 games in a row is either Lucchessi or Lauer (going on 4 days rest).  This would be the "4th" starter i.e. 4th game after the ASB.

To me, Logan Allen should go down and just stay on semi regular schedule.  Phil Maton threw 50+ pitches yesterday, so I think he's down too.  Likely Erlin back.  Unfortunately Miguel Diaz hit AAA IL, so G. Reyes only other RP option.  Think they're very close to adding a RP to 40-man.  Stock simply has to do better or he's a DFA candidate, but they'll give him a chance.

IMO Strahm should go down too after today's start to just save innings, but maybe a few appearances out of pen to perhaps be in that role after the break?  Lamet is obviously relatively fresh, and a good candidate to pitch in that first series after the break.

Looks as though the SP is setting up for the pre-AllStar games as: Strahm - Quantrill - Lauer - Paddack - Lucchesi - Lamet. That still is giving Lauer - Paddack - Lucchesi the extra day rest. Then the 4 days off ... 3 game set ... day off. If they come back with those three for the first three on a lot of rest .... not really looking on the 4th starter (Strahm?) until the Tuesday of the following week, then reset the first three back to a 4 day rest cycle which puts the 5th SP out even further. Basically, don't really need Allen, Quantrill, or Lamet to start for quite a spell.

That really give the Padres a lot of options how to best configure the ML roster until those 4th and 5th starters are needed (add RP / position player? both?) plus can give extra rest to the arms (Paddack? Strahm?) they feel need the time off or position some back in AAA to get extra work (Allen? Quantrill? Lamet?) pending the call-back. All have MiL options so easy to do ... no idea which "need" takes priority.

I guess we should keep in the back of our minds the small chance of a trade right after the break (MLB does not like deals during the break) ... that could add or delete from the SP options.

Who goes down this week when Lamet gets called up?

Just give him Matons' spot.

DFA him and lets roll.

If not he will go once Castillo is fully ready...... may as well do it now.

Remember there is an open 40 man slot due to DFA of Wisler so adding Lamet will likely result in a player being optioned not DFA'd.

Now when (if) Castillo returns ... a different question.

Remember......Maton deserves it.
