Looks as though the SP is setting up for the pre-AllStar games as: Strahm - Quantrill - Lauer - Paddack - Lucchesi - Lamet.  ?? That still is giving Lauer - Paddack - Lucchesi the extra day rest. Then the 4 days off ... 3 game set ... day off. If they come back with those three for the first three on a lot of rest .... not really looking on the 4th starter (Strahm?) until the Tuesday of the following week, then reset the first three back to a 4 day rest cycle which puts the 5th SP out even further. Basically, don't really need Allen, Quantrill, or Lamet to start for quite a spell.

That really give the Padres a lot of options how to best configure the ML roster until those 4th and 5th starters are needed (add RP / position player? both?) plus can give extra rest to the arms (Paddack? Strahm?) they feel need the time off or position some back in AAA to get extra work (Allen? Quantrill? Lamet?) pending the call-back. All have MiL options so easy to do ... no idea which "need" takes priority.

I guess we should keep in the back of our minds the small chance of a trade right after the break (MLB does not like deals during the break) ... that could add or delete from the SP options.

Well, since they can option L. Allen today & not need him for basically 2 weeks, AND Machado is serving his 1 game suspension today, the obvious choice today would be a position player.  Obvious choice is Ty France, but after starting today he would then be deep bench, which is OK.

But Strategically, I really like the idea of Austin Allen being available as a LH bat /3rd C.  Really frees Pads up to do different things like use Hedges as a late game pinch hitter on a double switch for defense when guarding a small lead; reverse of that = sub Mejia for offense when down, just pinch hit earlier in games, etc.

COULD be Luis Urias, but I hate the idea of him going back down if/when Pads move to 8 man pen again after the break.

You might be right on the SP alignment, but a lot of ways they could go.  Really the only issue is that the last SP before break "can't" be the 1st SP after ("only" normal  4 days rest), which affects Lucchessi's placement.  And the "#4" SP after break would go on 4 days rest IF they stick with a 5-man rotation (would need to be Lauer or Lucchessi); but they don't have to do that.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Lamet go first vs LAD and again in top 3, maybe even first after ASB.  Would Love R/L/R/L SP stagger...

Did you really just say “like use Hedges as a late game pinch hitter”?

Surely you meant something else?

Maton optioned to AAA .... Erlin recalled.

Better suited as a late game RP than pinch hitter 🙁

With Jankowski beginning his rehab in EP tonight, he should be eligible to come off the 60 day DL well before the trade deadline. He COULD be optioned to AAA but if he returns to the 25 man (likely) should result in Naylor being optioned (probably a good idea since he has not taken off hitting wise yet). Hopefully a Margot / Jankowski platoon solidifies CF both offensively and defensively.

Doubt he has any trade potential now but he might make it easier for the Padres to consider moving one of their OF assets, if needed, in a deal.

Well that escalated quickly.

We went from being down by 1 solo home run to down by 6 solo home runs.

I just don’t think we have that many in us tonight.

This Guy Bedde is tough!🙄

What an amazing coach is Bochy, he really makes his players perform way better than expected year in and year out, 13 years ago the front office at the time really screwed it up, big time

Thank goodness Padre management reads this message board 😂😂

Whilst we're on the subject, leave Meyers in CF, bat him 9th. We're not winning anything this year. Let Wil get his confidence back, get the numbers up, and trade him!

Padres lose 3 games in a row (2 to the last place Giants) and fall 2.5 games out of the Wild Card slot with a lot of teams in the mix. That sets up the next 5 pre All-Star break games as the tone setter for the second half and 4 of those are in LA against the dominate Dodgers.

If the Padres loose 4 of 5 (maybe even 3 of 5) could conceivably fall 5 games out and have 5 or 6 clubs positioned ahead of them. Sure possible to overcome that but very unlikely ... so we could see the Padres become clear "sellers" in July and a line-up that focuses on setting up 2020.

In that scenario, agree that Myers has to play ... a lot. Reports are that he is getting extra work on the velocity machines and with the hitting coaches but that only is valuable if it translates into game production. Problem is that Renfroe and Reyes have hit well enough to get playing time and Margot deserves playing time (he has been much better in the past month or so) and is a legit CF. IF no trade, best bet is to option Naylor (not hitting) and Jankowski after his rehab ... just go with the 4 man mix.

However, the trade option is there ... can't see anyone taking Myers unless the Padres carried virtually all his contact and attached a premium prospect (e.g. Gore) and that is not going to happen. So, trade one of Renfroe, Reyes, or Margot? All would have buyers ... not great returns though.

Wonder if the "experiment" with Renfroe in CF (allowing Naylor to play in LF) reflects a "showcasing' of Renfroe to other teams, seeing if he could be a backup CF if they move Margot and Myers starts in CF, seeing if he could be a better CF than Myers setting up Myers return as a LF?

Should note that other than 7 HR in the past month (only 12 RBI), Renfroe has been bad offensively ... sort of regressing to the old Renfroe low BA / low OBP / hight K-rate. Was his earlier season performance just a "hot streak"? We will see.

Hasn't Renfroe had a bad neck the past 3 or 4 weeks? Certainly would explain the dip in production.

As for CF, try him! Didn't he get drafted as a CF? I know I'm through with seeing Margot there.

Play Renfroe, Meyers, and Reyes the rest of the year. Get a true indication of what we have with Hunter and Franimal, and see if we can recoup any of the stupid money that was thrown at Meyers.
