With the SD bullpen taking a beating this season; especially with over use, any chance they take a flier on recently released Cody Allen? He would be a league minimum salary with ANA on the hook for the balance of the salary. And with our history of turning around discarded RPs, could turn around well for SD.

I like this idea ... here's a comment from another site that I read ...

What happened to Allen was the fastball. Drop in speed and movement. Until last year Allen could rare back and throw at the corners, and just when you had him timed here came a fine curve. And another. Curve still good. Fastball not so much.  If you hear in next couple of years that the fastball is back, might want to take a chance on him.

Back to .500 and still in the Wild Card race (so are a lot of teams with over half the season to go). Should make for an interesting trade deadline.

Logan Allen's debut was outstanding .... SHOULD earn him at least another ML start thus allowing more "down time" for Paddack helping his innings management. Allen does not need innings management (nor do Lucchessi, Lauer, or Quantrill). Strahm does so maybe later in the season they work a Strahm / Paddack combo for the 5th SP slot.

Mejia's HR just wets the appetite for a catcher who may be able to hit ... kid has a quick bat for sure. Hopefully he gets legit playing time while sharing time with Hedges.

I couldn't  agree more. It would be great  to get offense  from our catcher. Kinsler has been better ,it would just leave CF as our black hole of hitting. Myers has been bad but on base is .322 which  is ok for Padres. Maybe try something  radical  like batting 9th.would get good pitches  to hit as 2nd lead off and Tatis up next. He would hate it but might be the wakeup  call he and the whole team needs, that the team comes first  and egos second. Also kudos  to Allen, I want to see more, always thought he could be better than Quantrill

I'm not watching today's game ... but I just checked on-line box score ... SHOCKING to see that *EVERY* spot in the line up has been on-base at least once ... and it's still the 3rd inning! 🙂

So that K of Arcia to end the top of the 5th is a perfect example of one of my “baseball pet peaves”.

On strike 3 you only have to throw the runner out at 1st base if the catcher “drops strike three”.

Most of the time they go through with the throw and the umpire  doesn’t call the batter out even though the ball only hit the ground....the Catcher never dropped it.

It bounced as he swung and the Catcher caught it clean.

What if the throw gets away will they give the hitter 1b even though the throw was never necessary in the 1st place?

It’s become common place for catchers to throw down to 1b just because they’re afraid the umpire will give him the bag when the pitch was never dropped.

Is it just me that this bothers?

Aren’t I interpreting the rule correctly?

You guys did watch Mejia's other AB's right?

He struck out on a pitch that he couldn't have hit with a step ladder!

Kind of looked like Hedges to me - feast or famine.

I hope he does take the opportunity and kills it. AG just needs to give him a real chance.

The ball has to be caught without hitting the ground.  It doesn't matter if it was dropped or not.  If its a wild pitch on a swinging strike three, you will end up with a runner on first.  So yes, if the catcher didn't throw the Arcia could have gone to first.  Usually the runners just give themselves up on a play like that which is why the umpire doesn't bother signaling.

What a great win yesterday!  # of takeaways:

1)  This lineup works:  Tatis/Hosmer/Machado/Renfroe... P 8th.  It's also ideal to slot Urias as the #9 hitter... If he gets rolling could explore moving him to 1 or 2, but this just might work better.

2)  Mejia...  His bat speed & arm are just off the chart "blessed with" tools.  They should have had that game ending double play.  I saw a lot of the last 2 games & I really felt like Mejia's framing had improved dramatically; really seemed like Pads P's were getting a lot of marginal calls.  Maybe just the ump/s, but encouraging.  His blocking is still rough though... not sure realistic he'll ever approach Hedges' skill level there.   Like the idea of pairing him all the time with Logan Allen; need to let him play consistently.

3)  I hereby nominate Luis Perdomo for the 6th inning role literally nobody seems able to grab ahold of!  Wisler, Miguel Diaz, even Gerardo Reyes have flashed, but just not a "reliable" feeling.   See if Perdomo can handle the high leverage situations like he did yesterday

I hope Pads do drop a RP & add a position player just to have that 5th guy on bench.  With "healthy recall" RP availability still so tight, don't see them adding Urias here.  So France or Pirela.  With so many off days, this guy is "just" going to be a pinch hitter, so I would go with Pirela who has handled that role well in past.

Sure looks like SP's in Baltimore will be Logan Allen & Strahm.  Leaves Quantrill out, but he may make trip to pitch after Lauer on 1st game.... Lauer really needs to show up that game; disastrous again in Colorado didn't look good... chance that HE goes down instead of Quantrill (for Paddack on 6/22) if another bad outing.

Adding the position player, then Paddack on 22nd, would give 8 man pen for 1st day after an off day, then 7-man pen for 2 games/off/2 games/off... should be able to navigate that.

Then look to reset to 8-man pen with preferred guys for the last 10 games in a row before ASB.  i.e. Recall M. Diaz, Erlin, 6th SP

Look for Urias right after the ASB with a 7-man pen?  Should work if just keep rotating the 7th guy up/down.  Urias can help this team a lot more than the 8th RP.

Heard a speculation that the 7 man pen for the next couple of weeks is likely plus when Paddack returns (SAT) Quantrill may go to the pen. Friday or Saturday add a position player and dropping a RP. IF that is the scenario, two RP will get optioned / DFA'd in the next couple of days. No particular choice among Reyes, Maton, or Wieck getting optioned and an outside chance Wisler is DFA'd ... or a new IL player emerges.

At some point Diaz, Stock, Erlin will be eligible to return and don't know Warren's status and have to consider the potential readiness of Castillo and Lamet ... so a lot of flexibility. With the DFA of Makita, a 40 man slot is open to return them from the 60 day IL.

As for a position player to return for a bench role / PH ... a toss up but leaning towards Pirela who may be better suited to PH/PR/double switch at 2B/OF if needed.

These moves and the July juggling with potential trades / roster clean-up will make the next few weeks interesting.

Lucchesi, Lauer, Paddack, Allen, Strahm / Quantrill (innings sharing) could cover the future starts while Yates, Stammen, Wingenter, Perdomo, ?, ?, then ? when the extra position player is dropped post All-Star game.
