Quote from fenn68 on June 7, 2019, 2:14 pmHedges future may be tied to landing on a team with a very productive offense (something the Padres are not). Actually a very productive offense on an AL team given the DH would give that team 8 strong bats to carry an elite defensive catcher to improve the pitching staff.

Quote from BoosterSD on June 7, 2019, 3:08 pmThe NL could have the DH as soon as 2020, and by 2021 at the latest. Is it worth holding onto Hedges and hoping for the DH in 2020?

Quote from Brian Connelly on June 7, 2019, 4:50 pmInteresting P 8th lineup again:
Tatis, Myers (CF), Machado, Hosmer (L), Reyes, Naylor (LF) (L), Hedges, P, Garcia (L)
I thought they might bump Hosmer up to #2 vs RHP, but trying to get Myers & his speed going; he will see pitches in front of Manny
Reyes at 5 still better than 2nd... I don't buy that small sample size they kept talking about: 4 for 37 batting 4th, something like that... that's literally like 10 games. Maybe some from early in season where his BABIP luck was terrible but he was driving stuff. His power but low OBP match and also don't warrant batting before 4th.
Boy, Mejia & Urias (initially before working his way up to 1 or 2) sure would look good in this alignment @ 7 & 9...

Could ... but the key is getting Allen/Mejia more playing time to see if they are a better option and then it is judgmental as to paying Hedges $2MM+ / year for his 3 remaining control years .... as a part-time / back-up. That is the likely scenario unless BOTH Allen / Mejia produce. Then at some point they have to factor in Campusano and Torrens moving up as ML options. So not likely Hedges has a greater than 3 year future.
Not sure much of a market for him so not likely a trade candidate unless a throw-in in a larger deal or for a non-impact prospect.
I expect him to be around in 2020 (at least initially) ... just in a reduced role since the Padres do seem to appreciate him and his overall impact on the team.

Quote from WindsorUK on June 9, 2019, 12:28 pmLauer another strong outing, following Lucchesi's outing....... I'm thinking these 2 guys are looking like long term solutions.
We'll have the second half of the season to see if Lamet is up for job as well.
Be nice to have 3 spots locked in and under financial control for the next 5 years.
With Paddock as the top guy, our rotation is looking really good for the near future.
Lauer another strong outing, following Lucchesi's outing....... I'm thinking these 2 guys are looking like long term solutions.

Yep, getting some confidence in the SP for the next 5-6 years. Next year might see a boost for Richards and Lamet but tantalized by the arrival of L.Allen and the further emergence of Quantrill to support Lucchesi, Lauer, Strahm, Paddack then Gore by the end of 2020 .... followed maybe in 2020 by Patino, Baez, and Bolanos.
Sort of why not really pushing to overpay for a big name SP now ... a guy who could fail as well as the prospects ... check out the under performance by Syndergaard this season or the injury to Kluber. Keep focused on the long game.
