I guess I could understand adding Margevicius as a SP to start the season given the alternatives and his ST work but he just is not that good unless his command is pinpoint ... and it has not been.

Sending him down before made sense ... calling him back up did not. At this point in the season, not sure why they would not add L.Allen to the 40 man and call him up instead of Margevicius. Allen has been effective in the hitter friendly PCL and he is a much more highly regarded prospect. Calling him up now would not cost a control year. He did pitch 149 innings in 2018 so should not be on an innings limit. DFA of Pirela or Stock is not a concern.

Going to add Allen to the 40 man in the off-season anyway .... so why not move up the inevitable and give him some ML experience and potentially a better SP alternative than Margevicius?

This will happen soon.  There are 2 reasons why it hasn't:

1) L. Allen is making starts the same day as Quantrill (just started last night), so just lined up "wrong" at the moment for Margevicius' spot... which of course is easy to fix.

2)  But this is the main one:  need to get Pirela off the DL before he can be optioned & DFA much like Dickerson was.  Hand in hand with this is Cordero being ready/available as a 6th OF (or 4th/5th bumping Naylor back to AAA).

LOVE this lineup!  Tatis #1, but Margot #9 really makes him more like a #2....  having the P 8th increases the chance of a runner on for Tatis & the guys after him...

Myers batting 2nd & playing 1B vs LH Corbin who he has crushed (.370 in 27 AB vs Hosmer 0 for 8).  BUT it implies that vs. RHP, the LH Hosmer will be in that same #2 hole...  and big boy cleanup!

Padres teased with a fast start ... but I have to remember before the season projecting an 81-81 team was optimistic coming off the last 3 seasons of 66-96, 71-91, and 68-94. Last .500 or better was 2010.

So, at 31-31 I should be happy with their improvement ... but with the tease ... want more. 100 games to go, could still go a lot of ways but that is why we watch.

I am extremely optimistic about the rest of the season.  With 100 games to go, what other team from within...

  1. Is getting Tatis Jr back after missing a month+
  2. Is close to getting Cordero back after missing all but a week of the season
  3. Has 2 top 35 MLB prospects in AAA  tearing the cover off the ball... at 2 positions hurting the Pads the most offensively in MLB
  4. Has LHRP J. Castillo about to start rehab assignment; again area of huge need (Bullpen, especially LH)
  5. May gain Dinelson Lamet &/or (more likely) Matt Strahm in pen due to return/innings limitations

In short, Padres Offense stands to get much better, and Bullpen could too... it will end up being the starting pitching that's the limiting factor / missing piece.

Reyes finally hitting clean up...still comes up with bases empty.

But Walks!

Woot Woot!

Im pretty sure that the Padres have someone to do laundry, slide next time!!!

Extremely ugly 1st from Lucchesi but he appeared to tidy things up through 5.

He obviously didn't have much control but did he get hit hard as well?

We've seen Lauer consistently get better after an extended bad spell, hope Joey follows the same path.

And nice to see a major league lineup after watching what appeared to be a slow pitch softball beer league one😂

Lucchesi was cruising through the first inning....12 strikes in first 13 pitches.

Then left a few over the plate and good hitters hit him hard.

Pretty impressive with his pitch count where it was after 2 to get through 5 and get the win.

Really gutty performance yesterday to bounce back and stay in the game. Thought that some of the ABs yesterday were nice and drawing some walks, and then a crush from Renfroe to spark the offense. Good win.

Tatis' speed is game changing.
