Or on it ?
Too bad Garcia could not make any plays.....Is anybody else tired of his shaky defense and watching strikes right down the tube ?

Quote from fenn68 on June 2, 2019, 1:40 amI has been a rare occurrence that the Padres have a winning record (30-28) and are just 2 games out of the wild card slot on June 2. So I am enjoying it now since I see some ominous clouds forming later in the season ... more that can be offset by just one or two "showy" deals. Hope I am wrong BUT
1. Although the Padres above .500 ... they have played the FEWEST games for a NL team against teams with a greater that .500 record and have recorded an abysmal 7-13 record (great against the poor teams they are fine with a 23-15 record). The second half of the season (especially Aug/Sep) they will hit a much tougher schedule ... fair to project a fade later in the season?
2. Offensively they rank 22nd in wRC+ (87) and that is against those lesser pitching staffs on losing teams. What happens when the face the better staffs?
3. Relief Pitching is 15th in ERA (4.30) and if it were not for Yates they would be much worse overall and he is being worked hard ... does he fade in the summer?
4. Starting Pitching has been the best factor although again that is against the sub-500 teams then add the innings control on the likes of Paddack / Strahm the two most effective SP ... the overall staff results should be less.
Frankly this CURRENT roster has to prove a lot more against stronger competition before I would make any major trade that would (could) diminish the future coming up in the system.
The fact that the LAD will runaway with the NL WEST leaving the wild card and a one game play in as the only prize ... not a good gamble since even if they got in and won, they are nowhere near competitive with the three Division winners.
Just enjoy the 2019 ride but keep the focus on the long game ... Padres are just not a complete enough team yet.
========
Side notes: Padres payroll is about $116MM this year ... next year with the pluses and minuses of the current roster is should be about the same ... maybe a bit higher depending on Yates' arbitration. Never have heard anything to suggest that it can go much higher unless they are really in contention and even then maybe another $10MM? $10MM is not nearly enough to add quality to cover all the holes in the roster until a wave of the prospects are up and effectively producing (i.e. Tatis, Urias, some of the better arms).
Then add reality that no one will take Myers without the Padres eating virtually all his salary (too many options for other teams that cost less) or Kinsler who is just terrible both offensively and defensively this year. Result is that no meaningful payroll reductions are coming near team.
So, stick with the long term plan of phasing in the elite prospects and phasing out the older (more expensive) players.

Quote from fenn68 on June 3, 2019, 6:36 amAt one level the following shouldn't matter but could it:
Myers:
as a LF: 95 AB .... 305/359/547 (907)
as a CF: 69 AB ... 101/253/188 (441)
possibly no correlation but that is a big difference and not a real small sample. I have contended that to get the max out of Myers they should just sit him in LF and stop shuffling him around to CF/3B/1B. Seems like a case that the Padres want him to be versatile and he is willing ... just not working.
Now I do understand the alternative now for Myers in CF is Margot and he is not hitting .... 131 AB ....229/252/313 (565) suggesting the need to go outside for a CF upgrade (not waiting for Cordero or Jankowski to emerge).
As it stands Renfroe to RF would be an offensive / defensive upgrade over Reyes.
Not sure that a Myers - Margot - Renfroe OF would not be more productive offensively/defensively than the Renfroe - Myers - Reyes set-up if Myers' LF production is where it has been. Given the poor offensive production overall ... maybe worth going with that line-up.

Quote from BoosterSD on June 3, 2019, 11:10 amThis all gets back to the same situation where we have 3 similar Corner OF players, all who can be productive for periods and need playing time, however only 2 positions for them to play. Unfortunately CF is brought into issue because while Margot offers a lot defensive value/upside over Myers, but does not offer the potential that Myers has in the batters box over Margot. Which leads to the question; that we have gone through many times, is what to do with Myers, Renfroe, and Reyes. IMO, Myers is the albatross around our neck because of his salary(especially starting next year) especially bad for SD since Reyes and Renfroe are outproducing him at a much lower salary. And even though many on here are not excited about the installing of the DH in the NL, it could be a good thing for SD. Allowing Reyes to be DH, and Myers in LF and Renfroe in RF. With some sort of Margot, Jank, Cordero combo in CF unless we can find a better CF option. Or, you get creative and attach a really good prospect to Myers and take back some bad money from another team, preferably a pitcher that Balsley can work his mojo on!

Not an ideal fix but hey, we've tried crazier things!( Jon Kruk in the outfield anyone?)

He did in college ... but that was at least 20 pounds ago.

Quote from fenn68 on June 3, 2019, 3:36 pmQuote from WindsorUK on June 3, 2019, 2:36 pmWhen do we cut bait with Kinsler? Does he go when Tatis comes back? A week or so?
Expect France to go with Machado moving back to 3B.
I can somewhat understand the signing of Kinsler ... before the Machado deal and before any expectation the Tatis would start the season on the ML squad they needed a veteran body (albeit thought they overpaid).
Actually ... offensively ... in May he was reasonably productive after a truly ugly April:
April: 72 AB .... 111/190/181
May: 71 AB ... 254/309/521 and that should be enough to keep him (and his contract) around for a while plus IF he keeps that pace he could be a trade deadline piece that could be move to clear his contract (at least in part). A serviceable platoon with Garcia (who is also putting up some OK numbers).
On the downside ... for a guy that won a gold glove last season he has not looked good to me in the field at all. At 36 and on what should be a final contract, maybe the juice is all gone.
Garcia is not the answer as a starting 2B ... although a useful bench option as a LHH on this team. Urias is the wild card and despite his gaudy stats in EP maybe the Padres development staff still see some flaws that need to be worked on before returning and that is delaying his return. So, maybe Kinsler for the foreseeable future.
