Stroman: good initial start (so healthy) ... making only $7.4MM and carries one more arbitration year (mid-teens likely). Downside ... Toronto has been (and I suspect will continue to) demand a mega prospect return and if they don't get that they just wait until the trade deadline or next winter.

Kuechel: working simulated games and is the type of pitcher that probably does not a lot of reps to get into game speed. Downside ... Boras is his agent and is still holding out for that premium / long term deal plus signing Kuechel before the MLB draft does cost a draft choice.

I will put money (not my money) on Kuechel ... losing the draft pick vs. elite prospects is more palatable .... IF they can come to an agreement with Boras on a 1 year deal greater than the QO. IF I understand the rules ... since he would be signing during the season the Padres could not offer him a QO and he would be returning to the FA market next winter (unencumbered). At some point that has to work for Boras.

Would guess the less than stellar performance by Allen / Quantrill in ST and the innings limited on Paddack / Strahm and the more risky projection for a season of Margevicius ... while exuberant about adding Machado - Tatis - et. al. has kicked the veteran SP option back into play.
