Giants are 5th in team payroll at $173 mil.....yikes!
They’re paying guys like Samardzija,Melancon,Belt and Crawford ALOT of money.
Maybe some is coming off soon?
Let's hope not 😉 SF did what they had to last offseason with a horrible Farm (pre-Bart) & went all in on Vets.
But IMO they should have sold off big time at Deadline & didn't. They need to Sell off to trade their Farm up to at least average.
Will always have $ resources, but they are the worst positioned NL West team for forsee-able future

Quote from fenn68 on March 29, 2019, 9:12 amOK, time to put some optimistic logic to support irrational exuberance for the Padres season. Consider:
a. Padres were very bad last season (only 66 wins)
b. Padres are better than they were last season with Machado, Tatis, Myers solidified in LF, and even with an inexperienced SP staff it is still better than the 2018 SP staff, etc.
c. Arizona (lost Goldschmidt, Corbin, Pollack with little backfill) and SF is just old, injured, with no OF .... both should be significantly worse than they were last season.
d. Against AZ/SF last season the Padres were 15-23 ... not a real stretch that given the changes in the teams that record could flip to 23-15 .... +8 win to get the Padres up to 74 wins even if they continue to play badly as in 2018 against the rest of the league ... but they should be better.
e. Against LAD/COL they were 13-26 ... can debate if those teams are the same/better/or worse but if they just pick-ed up 2 wins in each of those match-up ... another +4 to 78 wins.
f. Then against the rest of the league (86 games) they have the room to pick-up since they not all the good against them last season ... 5 more wins? Padres up to 83.
A lot has to come together sure but the maybe that leap to a winning season is not that irrational.

Quote from LynchMob on March 29, 2019, 3:55 pmDo Padres have a guy that can play catcher in an emergency?
If not, Mejia can't pinch-hit, right?

Myers ... he can do it all 🙂 .... actually he was a HS catcher and signed as a C before KC moved him to the OF as I recall.
Really stretching my memory but think Renfroe was a HS catcher at some point.

Quote from 84padres on March 30, 2019, 9:44 amWatched the whole game last night. The last 2 Giants (Parra and Belt) had a real complaint. Both called 3rd strikes were balls and not real close. Barksdale had a very bad day with balls and strikes all night. I've had enough of Maton allready, I thought he might have turned the corner in spring training but I say try and trade him ASAP and get anything. Yates looked shakey but got bailed out. I feel kind of bad for Bochy cause the Giants are awful. Lets see what Margevicius can do tonight and keep it going.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 30, 2019, 11:28 amUmp was calling off the plate inside to righthanders strikes all game.
But the exact same location(outside) to lefthanders was being called a ball.
Saw it a dozen times at least.
Not a great strike zone last night.

Those definitely weren't the only complaints with both the high and low K being erratic. Where'd I dare say that Lucchesi did not benefit from, while Holland did.
