If we don’t get this win for The Sheriff it’s gonna really hurt!
Just got home from the game.....Only needed one today.....Paddack was just filthy !!!!!
This young man is going to be the Ace the Padres have needed barring any injuries....this could be really fun to watch and Tatis cracks me up....he plays the game just like a little kid always smiling but a total gamer. Reminds me a being a kid and choosing up teams at the park and play for 9 innings then re pick teams and play another 9 or 20 innings or until it got dark and just having fun playing baseball
On to Washington....Go Pads !!!!!!

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 24, 2019, 4:33 pmOr, more simply, can Espinosa just be directly sent to the 60 day IL to open a roster spot?
I am pretty sure they can do this; but it (i.e. MLB pay & service time) has to be retroactive to his last game played/when injury occurred. I remember Pads doing this in the past, but usually later in the year when there was a super tight roster. In Espinoza's case, you'd be paying him a full year of MLB salary if you make this move, but it would give you a 40-man roster spot it really looks like we're going to need during 2019. I'm almost positive Padres can not DFA an injured player off the 40-man; that would be completely unfair. But pretty sure they can & will DFA/non-tender him in offseason.
Before this unfortunate event I had been thinking that it would be smart to just DFA Javier Guerra now to create the roster spot, and hope no one else claims him as a RP conversion project. If he starts playing & is really hitting high 90's as a LHRP, and THEN you end up needing his 40-man roster spot, someone will claim him even though this is his last option year.
Guerra is still on the DFA short list, but this situation has the potential to indirectly "save" his 40-man spot at least for a while...

Quote from 84padres on April 26, 2019, 7:52 pmJust when you give up on Renfroe he comes through in the pinch. He has a place on this team because of the late power threat he brings. Looks like Strahms first two starts are behind him and he could be a long term answer as a number 3 with Lucchesi as a 4 Paddock a 2 and Lamet or Lauer or Margevicius and hopefully Gore as a 1. Still leaves Patino and Morejon and Avila and others as fall back options. The future looks bright knock on wood

Quote from LynchMob on April 27, 2019, 7:15 amLast night's W over Nats/Scherzer seems like a BIG "W"! I did not expect them to score a run off Scherzer, let alone win!
That losing streak really spooked me ... it was a flavor of "regression" for sure ... but I'm starting to feel like this team can clear the 80-win hurdle this season ... and the future is bright!
Urias seems to be working hard and well at AAA ... this Padres team will be better once Luis solidifies his game.
Nice to see Hosmer getting some results ... he's still a huge concern ...

Quote from fenn68 on April 27, 2019, 8:09 amTime to give some hype to Strahm for his 2019 work. Last season the club / media were touting Strahm's potential to convert to a SP ... he worked to gain strength over the winter to handle that role ... had a BAD first start in 2019 BUT since then:
4 starts (5-5-8-6 innings) with only 4 ER over those 24 innings (1.50 ERA)!
It is early ... sure .... but for now looking like he is locking down a starting role for the next few years.

Quote from fenn68 on April 27, 2019, 8:29 amSP has been a surprise so far. In 2018 the Padres SP was 27th in MLB (5.09 ERA) ... so far in 2019 they are 5th (3.39 ERA). Going into 2019 most pundits thought the Padres would have terrible SP again with only some improvement from Lucchesi and Lauer being the hope and then a string of ??????? for the rest of the SP.
So, the pundits are wrong. Consider:
Strahm (excluding his first start) .... 1.50 ERA (4 starts / 24 innings)
Paddack .... 1.67 ERA (5 starts / 27 innings)
Margevicius ... 3.60 ERA (5 starts / 25 innings)
Lucchesi ... 4.33 ERA (5 starts / 27 innings) vs. 2018 ERA of 4.08 ERA
Lauer ... 4.67 ERA (5 starts / 27 innings) vs. 2018 ERA of 4.34
Surprising the two "givens" for starting Lucchesi / Lauer are actually performing WORSE than they did in 2018 while new guys are carrying the load. Still early but IF the Padres can remain in contact for a wild card run into July ... we might see an upgrade for at least one of the SP slots ... that, as of now, might put Lauer or Lucchesi at risk.
Unfortunate that the top prospects in AAA (Allen and Quantrill) are not making a compelling case for their promotion. Doubt Richards or Lamet will be ready (and effective) that soon. So could be a difficult debate in the FO if they feel compelled to take the upgrade route.

Quote from fenn68 on April 27, 2019, 8:35 amIn his post game interview ... Green's comments clearly indicate that they see Renfroe's ability to really hit LHP and expects to give him starts soon as they will see some LHP starting.
Side benefit is that Reyes gets some off days ... probably a good idea for a player of his size playing the OF if they want to keep him in top form for the full season.

Quote from 3fingersplit on April 28, 2019, 5:47 amI've said it before and I'll say it again....Renfroe will hit 25-30 HR....enough of the Renfroe can't do this or that
He got the HR in a pinch....Padres beat Scherzer....He takes Strasburg deep.....and his defense is way better than Reyes....What else does he have to do?
The Padres just knocked off two of the best pitchers in the NL and Renfroe had a huge part in both....can we dispense with the trade Renfroe talk for awhile...he is such a huge part of this team in so many ways
