2019 3B ?????

Some might depend whether Urias secures the 2B slot to open 2019 ... otherwise Asuaje might end up there. IF Urias gets 2B ... might see a four way battle (likely for a platoon approach again) among Villanueva (R), Spangenberg (L), Asuaje (L), and and experiment with Pirela (R) testing at 3B assuming they are all still Padres next spring.

Agree don't see anything in the FA market that is not on the decline, injury risk, and/or just over priced with virtually no value for the future and even questionable improvement over the current mix and match.

Trade market ... not sure who might be on the market but in most cases would not deal any top prospects to get just a "decent" 3B body at this point. Don't really see any hot 3B prospects that could be had who would be a factor in 2019.

I could see a mix and match of Spangenberg (L) and Pirela (R) ... assuming he can field 3B ... being the better offensive mix while Asuaje is the "reserve" INF and caddy for Urias.

As a random thought ... with no ML SS under contract for 2019 ... maybe Urias come up at SS and Asuaje is the 2B?

Think the 3b of the future is Potts, if the player is in fact already in the system.  Would also not rule out Ty France seeing time there over the next couple years. He strikes me as a ML player mostly off the bench; Sean Rodriguez comp.

A Hand trade with CLE could add an option:  Hand & Stammen for McKenzie, Jones and Ice.

With the rumored return of Asuaje and the DFA of Szczur we could see some stable pattern of play between now and the trade deadline.

OF has Myers / Margot / Renfroe ... all RHH with Jankowski a LHH who can play all 3 slots defensively well setting up a reasonably structured 4 OF "rotation".

2B/3B might stabilize into a two platoon situations with Pirela / Villanueva the RHH platoon and Asuaje / Spangenberg the LHH platoon. None are really the future so no harm in the platoon plus to some degree a bit of a showcase for all four IF there is any trade nibbles for any of them.

I was just looking at WARs ... noticed Galvis is atop B-R.com's Defensive WAR list!

https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2018-batting-leaders.shtml

Defensive WAR
1. Galvis • SDP 1.6
2. Turner • WSN 1.5
3. Swanson • ATL 1.4
4. Russell • CHC 1.4
5. Bader • STL 1.4
6. Cain • MIL 1.3
7. Wong • STL 1.3
8. Duvall • CIN 1.2
Arcia • MIL 1.2
10. Rojas • MIA 1.2

Word is that Perdomo is back and will start tomorrow (probably not added to the roster until then). Expect a RP to be sent down.

7/9/18 San Diego Padres optioned 3B Cory Spangenberg to El Paso Chihuahuas.
7/9/18 San Diego Padres optioned RHP Miguel Diaz to San Antonio Missions.
7/9/18 San Diego Padres recalled RHP Phil Maton from El Paso Chihuahuas.
7/9/18 San Diego Padres recalled RHP Walker Lockett from El Paso Chihuahuas.

This maybe is better for a 2019 discussion but might impact trade activity in 2018 (both ways). RE: Galvis.

First, possibly some team needing insurance at SS might come calling on Galvis ... minimal return (think Philadelphia) as a FA after the season.

Second, most recent rumors (discussions) have implied that: 1) Tatis is the Padres SS going forward (not thinking a 3B option now); and 2) the intent is to have Tatis in AA for the remainder of of 2018, then start 2019 in AAA with an anticipated call-up in June/July.

So a Padre dilemma .... who is their SS to start 2019 (but knowing he will be bumped as soon as Tatis arrives) and IF they can move Galvis (no real purpose other than to save money I guess) who is their SS for the remainder of 2018.

1. Do you just suck it up with Villanueva who can't field the position?

2. Do you just suck it up with Guerra who can't cross the .200 BA line in hitter friendly AAA?

3. Do you insert Urias now and shift him to 2B when Tatis arrives?

4. Do you (as part of a trade) pick up a "serviceable" SS who would settle into the back-up role after Tatis arrives (some value of having a legit back-up middle INF for both Tatis and Urias)?

Outside chance (not my favorite option) is to sign a FA SS (maybe even Galvis) over the winter to a favorable 1 year deal ... a lot of Galvis types on this year's FA market and not that may buyers ... so maybe.

As I said, a dilemma.

If there is something of value offered in trade (thinking the Norris-Avila deal as example) then move him. Otherwise no point in making an already over worked soon-to-be even younger pitching staff work even harder in the second half without a decent SS.

Which is also why Guerra would make sense if Galvis is dealt. Maybe just until September call ups. Great defense and some pop, but no hit at all.  Younger version of Dusty Coleman.

I’d be fine with resigning Galvis or signing Iglesias.

Neither should break the bank and neither would block Tatis for when he’s ready.

But if neither are options then play the best defender we have regardless of offense until Jr. is ready.

About a month ago I was upset that we looked like we would be drafting in the low teens.

Now I’m upset we are so bad we’re back into the top 5.

I am REALLY tired of losing but finishing 4th and drafting 12th would be worse I suppose.
