Regular Season Discussion
Quote from Cptjack on July 29, 2018, 8:30 pmQuote from David Nevin on July 29, 2018, 1:26 pmAbout a month ago I was upset that we looked like we would be drafting in the low teens.
Now I’m upset we are so bad we’re back into the top 5.
I'm quite happy. There was nothing to indicate we shouldn't have been drafting top 5 last year. Realistically, top 2 if we hadn't had Giant killing nothings win us way too many games against them.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2018, 4:07 amI’m beginning to think you would prefer sucking every year and never winning at the major league level so the Farm stays stocked.

Quote from Cptjack on July 31, 2018, 12:38 amI would take 100 losses every year over a mediocre roster that can only get us to the playoffs and never put us in contention for a championship.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2018, 12:22 pmYou can't win the world Series without first making the playoffs.
While I agree with you about either winning....or losing big,at some point all these prospects have to translate into wins.
Even if those wins don't equal a World Championship.
I have been a Padres fans since 1969....My greatest memories are the two seasons we made the World Series.
Yes we lost......but what else do we have?
I would love to see a full Petco(with Padre fans) every day. That won't happen without winning.
While having a great Farm system is fun....especially since it's all we've really had to enjoy recently...if it doesn't lead
to a winning Padre team what's it really all for?

They really don't though. Atlanta is proof of it. You just need enough guys to figure it out at the same time. The only way for that to happen is to play them. The worst thing that can happen is to be suckered in by a mediocre core that's just barely there (Brewers, Twins).

"The Padres have, indeed, held internal discussions about the possibility of using Myers as a third baseman, team sources said. For now, there are no imminent plans to get Myers game action at the hot corner. He might not seriously attack the position until the offseason or next Spring Training. But the team is proceeding with the hope that Myers could become a versatile option that could one day move back and forth regularly between the outfield and the infield."
My heart be still ... I guess it is worth a shot (not going to be worse than Villanueva / Spangenberg) but REALLY don't like the idea that he would back and forth REGULARLY between the outfield and the infield ... they should not even be considering that if they have any desire for Myers to actually field 3B with any skill level (sometimes repetition in game conditions actually helps quality ... this is not a computer game).
On the plus side IF it works out he is not pushing out anyone of value and Potts (if he develops) is still 3 years out setting up a POTENTIAL decent INF of Hosmer - Urias - Tatis - Myers. Plus the added value is that is should be significantly easier to upgrade corner OF slots via trade / FA than 3B. On the POTENTIAL downside ... increase the chance of seeing one of Mejia - Naylor - Allen in LF more than we can stomach from a defense point of view.
Side: feel a bit sorry for Myers (I know most are just frustrated with him) but signs with KC as a catcher ... goes to the OF sent to TB as a RF ... sent to SD as a CF ... shifted to 1B ... shifted to LF (where actually has looked good .. not great but good) ... and contemplating him a 3B (sometimes). He may not be a fan favorite but he does have ML talent that is being impinged by all these changes and with some consistency may be "better" than we have seen. (actually LF seems like a good home defensively).

While entertaining....the Farm system is there for one purpose,to improve the "major league" team.
Either by developing and promoting or via trade.
If having the #1 Farm system doesn't translate into the Padres competing for the Playoffs then it is all for nothing.
As it has been for Decades.
Hopefully with Preller and the current batch of prospects........it finally will.

I am OK with this. Guys who start at Catcher can usually switch to any corner position with relative ease, of course this is at ML level which makes it harder. With that being said, I also think they need to investigate the ability of Allen switching to 3B as well. This seems to be our biggest MiL hole with prospects and in the ML as well. I will say, that I would prefer that they just do it, no bouncing back and forth between the OF and 3B. If he can play decently there, just let him stay and rotate other OFs.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2018, 10:33 amI think Potts is our future 3b.
So we need a guy for just a couple seasons IMO.......is that Myers?
A free agent?
Franco for the Phils has really turned things around lately....I really wish we had picked him up while his value was down.
He hit .330 in July with 7 hr's. and a .971 OPS.
I was really hoping we could have swung a deal involving Ross and Yates or Stammen for a thirdbaseman.
