The Padres announced that they have designated right-hander Phil Hughes for assignment. He’ll step aside in favor of young starter Jacob Nix, whose contract was selected.
=======
Not a surprise.

I'm still trying to figure out why in the world we traded for this guy.
And don't tell me it was for a draft pick. That money( and the money wasted on Mitchell/Headley) could have been spent SO MUCH better elsewhere.

Look like it's happening this week David.
Should be an interesting last 50 games.

Quote from fenn68 on August 12, 2018, 10:46 amI have got to admit that I have no clue as to the thinking / logic on this whole Myers to 3B ... NOW ... and who is making the call (Preller?).
Yes, the Padres are the worst team in the NL .... Villanueva / Spangenberg are not the future ... that may lead you to why not NOW?
I guess 3B must be the easiest / safest position to play (it is not) in the Padres' minds considering Myers is one of their top assets (like that or not) they are dropping him into 3B after a couple of days working with the coaches and one rehab game ... this is a guy who has not played INF (I am not counting 1B which is more a catch the ball than field and throw position) ... coming off his second injury of the season and trying to reestablish himself offensively. Not sure doing this NOW benefits the team and may do more to keep Myers from actually developing into something close to the player they wanted.
IF they wanted to do the 3B experiment ... why not work with Myers over the winter and let him get his feet on dirt during ST?
Now they do want to see the maximum ABs for Renfroe / Reyes / Jankowski apparently to see if any of them show enough for the future ... so that may be a driver. If they see what they have in them ... and if Myers has ANY facility for 3B .... might set up Preller's winter strategy for trades.
The quotes from Green since the story came out seem to shift from "working with him with the coaches" through "taking some looks to develop some potential versatility (e.g. Zobrist type) to now "start when he returns for rehab". Sort of noncommittal to an action step. Sounds like a call from above (Preller / Fowler). Myers seems happy with the development ... so there is that ... we will see. Side: probably all means that either Pirela or Asuaje are moved off the roster upon Myers' activation.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 12, 2018, 2:40 pmFielding ground balls at 1B is the closest thing to fielding them at 3B.
You get more opportunities at 3B because there are more RH hitters but it’s as similar as it can be.
Can he make the throws?
Can he handle the ground balls day in and day out?
The biggest question remains the same as it always has with Myers.....can he stay healthy?
