Quote from WindsorUK on August 9, 2018, 11:09 pmNot a bad idea idea, David.
We know he's going miss a lot of games so might as well put him somewhere we have a lack of depth, as it won't really matter if he plays or not.
Here's to Franmil and Hunter's continued success!

Put him at 3B next year and let him sink or swim(hit or get hurt).
Myers would be the perfect DH hitter. Can't stay healthy as a position player obviously.

Quote from fenn68 on August 10, 2018, 6:26 amI am not getting overly optimistic on Renfroe or Reyes based on the small recent samples size. Hopefully their hot streaks are building some trade value (especially for Renfroe).
Lest we forget Myers work at 1B (not all that good with range or understanding of the position) ... moving him to 3B would be ugly if for no other reason that reaction time. Of the three he is by far the best defensive corner OF, consider 2018 as corner OF:
Myers: +2.3 dWAR .... +7 DRS
Reyes: -3.4 dWAR ..... +1 DRS (about the same playing time as Myers)
Renfroe: -5.5 dWAR .... + 1 DRS (about double the playing time of the other two)
Just put Myers in LF ... keep him there and combined with Margot in CF the OF is best defensively. Have Jankowski as the 4th OF for outstanding defense at all OF slots and let Renfroe / Reyes / Cordero win the RF slot (for now rooting for Reyes ... young and with some sense of bat control).
Keep looking for a filler 3B for 2019 and take a longer look at Potts in AA to see if he is the future.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 10, 2018, 7:25 amThis team is starving for offense.
I think the hope is that if Renfroe and Reyes turn into Adam Duvall type players.....limited defense and OB skills but able to drive in runs,it would be nice to have them in the lineup regularly.Last year Duval hit .250-.300-.390 but drove in 100 runs with 30+ homers.
Not an ideal player(and NOT my type player),but this team needs "someone" to drive in runs and Myers ain't doin it on the DL and neither is anyone else.Villanueva is basically that guy now.
Of course we would prefer a guy who can get on base AND have the ability to drive in runs but to this point that players has been Padre elusive.
I am hoping that Franchy Cordero is a guy who can play everyday but if not, platooning him and Renfroe to me sounds like the best idea for next year.Cordero's numbers against RH pitching is even better than Renfroe's against LH pitching.
Unless of course the DH is suddenly implemented.....lol

Quote from fenn68 on August 10, 2018, 8:47 amAgree they need the offense ... and will have to deal with some bad defense to get some (all of Renfroe, Reyes, and Cordero pencil out poorly on defense). For 2019 ... whomever wins out ... great.
My "concern" is more about making room for two of them (none have proven better than Myers offensively) ... taking a plus defensive OF and turning him to a minus-minus 3B. I know Villanueva is not turning heads but would the offensive plus from Renfroe or Reyes offset the defensive liabilities of both in the OF and Myers at 3B. I have zero faith in taking a soon to be 29 year OF/1B and converting him to a 3B ... not even just a little bad but real bad. (Better off taking the worst defense OF of the group and then covert him to 3B ... I am looking at you Renfroe).

Don't disagree ... BOTH would be disasters at 3B.

Quote from Commie on August 10, 2018, 12:49 pmAnyone think Ty France might get some consideration next ST? They did just promote him which they probably wouldn't do if they saw him as just an org guy right?

Yeah, I'm hoping Franchy can make it back and keep a spot in the lineup. He's got tools. Just hoping he learns to make more contact. As far as Renfroe goes I do agree it's a small sample as FENN said but his improved strikeout numbers give me hope that he can be more of a contact hitter from here on out. Not just weak grounder/pop flies type contact.
We need the DH! Heck, maybe the NL can add two DH spots to lineups. We have some DH big boys to fill those spots...lol. We do though.

Funny, I was just contemplating the same thing.
3B is (as likely will be) a problem for 2019 .... Villanueva / Spangenberg are not taking hold of the spot (and are just getting older) ... not much on the FA/trade market .... and maybe most importantly every indication is that the Padres LOVE Potts as the potential 3B of the future (maybe late 2020), so a 1 1/2 - 2 year "bridge".
Meanwhile France has just been plugging along as a very competent hitter who found some power in SA ... will be only 24 at the start of 2019. Yes he has been viewed more as a non-top prospect BUT even though he is a 34th round pick in 2015 his bat was praised at the point of the draft (no idea how he fell to 34th round ... defense was questionable).
So, if he is not taken in the Rule 5, I would expect he gets a real shot in ST to unseat Villanueva / Spangenberg (even more so if the somehow they move one or both in trades). 2019 will be tough for 3B and it is more of a bridge to Potts (hopefully) ... so why not try with France, maybe with Spangenberg ... and move on from Villanueva if they can get anything for him (his 20+ HR MIGHT generate some interest as part of a deal).
