Regular Season Discussion
Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2018, 10:34 amI am also really hoping we sign Galvis to another one year deal for next season while Tatis gets passed the last step.
He is worth his cost due to his defense alone....

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2018, 12:18 pmYou don't sign him.
What has he done to warrant a 3 year deal this year that he didn't do last year?
I guess it depends on who else wants an all field/no hit SS and is willing to sign him to a multi year deal?
What we should have done is what I was lambasted for suggesting 3 years ago...you trade for Jean Segura when he was available from the Brewers.

His agent may want a multi-year deal but the market will be against it .... not a lot of teams putting a defensive first SS on their priority list and the market has other similar alternatives as FA (Iglesias, Hechavarria).
Might get him on a 1 year deal with a option / buy-out clause.

So we need a guy for just a couple seasons IMO.......is that Myers?
A free agent?
Franco for the Phils has really turned things around lately....I really wish we had picked him up while his value was down.
He hit .330 in July with 7 hr's. and a .971 OPS.
I was really hoping we could have swung a deal involving Ross and Yates or Stammen for a thirdbaseman.
Sure looks like Potts will have the inside track for 3B in 2021 ... still very young and seems to keep improving as he settles in his new level.
I looked hard of a ML ready minor league option to get in a trade that I would have some confidence in ... just could not find anyone. FA this winter is not that encouraging. However, one potential option (not great but might have some appeal) is Moustakas ... not as good as the hype he gets but given how he did not succeed in FA last winter and just an OK season he might like to re-unite with Hosmer on a reasonable deal. He would be better than Villanueva / Spangenberg / ????. The really are only bridging 2 seasons (so 2 year deal with options if Potts stumbles?)
I DO NOT want to see Myers at 3B and even worse rotate in and out. He is actually putting positive defense numbers in LF and would prefer to just sit him there and have him perfect that slot (not as though there are any internal options pushing him).
As for Mejia (Indians tried in Fall League) and Allen working at 3B ... would think they BOTH should get worked their this winter. Mejia is very likely to be the #2 catcher for the Padres in 2019 so maybe he gets some limited looks but if he is to convert it will be in winter ball over a couple of season but then Potts arrives so timing. Allen hopefully gets some 3B work in the winter and in AAA next season ... but he has not been billed as the most agile guy ... so for a defensive perspective a long shot. Both may give some versatility in certain situations at 3B but hard to see them holding a regular spot. If neither are traded, best hope is two back up catchers, two back-up 3B/1B, and two back-up corner OF unless one of their bats really really takes off.
So pray for Potts in 2021 and hold your breath in 2019-20.

.
Would he be a candidate to play SS next year till Tatis is ready?

Yep ... although the Padres seem to "like" the clubhouse aspects of Galvis so maybe the try to work a deal with him first then as a fall back Hechavarria or Iglesias ... one or both (along with Galvis) is likely the be hung out to dry in this market.
Things change but just before Tatis' injury heard the speculation that 1) he is the future SS, 3B off the table for now; and 2) they planned to keep him in AA for the season ... start him in AAA in 2019 with a mid-season call-up (if warranted). So, a commitment to a veteran ML SS for 2019 seems appropriate.

Quote from Commie on August 1, 2018, 3:46 pmRather try to acquire a SS capable UTIL and give Guerra a look to start the year than bring in/back a guy who is a "starter." Was kinda hoping AJ would use Ross to acquire this type of player.
