Pre-2021 Planning

PreviousPage 23 of 30Next

Padres had Strahm in  2020 and probably will have him again in 2021 despite surgery on his knee; he's been generally reliable these past 2 years when pitching in relief and was very effective in 2018 when used almost exclusively in relief.  Castillo should be healthy in 2021 although he hasn't pitched much in two years; he has had injuries but not really to his pitching arm or shoulder that might be  career threatening so expect him to return to 2018 form.  Morejon has yet to prove he can go 5+ innings consistently without breaking down, so his place might ultimately be the bullpen; he has looked impressive at times and not so impressive at other times.  Would be nice to get a healthy LHRP but are any of those that might be available any better than Strahm, Castillo or Morejon and still be within a limited budget?  Maybe by trade vice free agency?

Brad Hand has cleared waivers and is free to sign with any team.

Probably not realistic but it sure would help.

I can't imagine the Phils not being all over Brad Hand at less than $10 mil per.

Then again...."everyone" will be.

I have seen a rumor circulating around that agents might be encouraging players to take 1 year deals in hopes that the market rebounds next year.  In addition there have been some rumblings that IF there is not a large difference in salary, that players would have more options of where to play, leaning to the possibilities that players could base the offseason chasing the ring instead of chasing the $.

It makes sense on paper, and bodes well for the Padres, but if I am a hitter do I really want that?  Someone like DJ LeMahieu is already 32.  He could wait a year and still be ok, but even then hes coming off a year where he won the batting title.  No matter how could a year he has, it will be hard for him to get a big $ deal next year (at 33).  But I am thinking more along the lines of Profar or Joc.  If they sign with a top 5 team (like the Padres or Dodgers) they probably wont be guaranteed a starting spot.  If they sign with a team like the Padres how much value do you gain by being a part time player?

If Padres do indeed have 10 mil to spend, see  how low you can offer some people.  I do think the Padres need to focus on adding another LHRP.  Pom was great but who else did we have?  Big game Tim Hill?

I can see both the player agents and the teams being most comfortable with one year deals ... given the unknown of next winter being better or worse for FA ... somewhat risk mitigation.

Not seen a comparison yet to previous years but seems as though more options are being declined ... usually not surprising on some of the big dollar options but also a lot of the lower end options ... suggesting teams not wanting to spend and/or they are not seeing a trade future for those marginal players.

If as expected, the non-tender list will be way higher than normal, the could be seeing a very large FA market ... giving teams a lot of time to make signing decisions and with high supply / low demand the ability to really lower the contract prices. Good chance we see signings pushed way out into 2021 ... after when (if) a 2021 season plan emerges. Fans generally don't see it this way but good chance that teams will view those mid-range / lower end FA and interchangeable parts ... so wait.

I do accept the cash flow issue with clubs and the uncertainty surrounding the next two years ... so for the non-contenders (even some of the contenders) ... it could make a lot of sense just avoid signing any mid to low range FA and go with internal options at league minimum as see if they really have a future. Not good for older fringe players finding a job and we may see a lot more veterans signing minor league deals.

Randy or anyone, was it reported that Strahm did or was going to have surgery?  If so, I missed it

Report came out about a week ago ... not sure when it was scheduled. 2017 he had a similar surgery on the other knee.

I agree with what I have read that there are probably 3 or 4 teams that will be very aggressive in the FA market and in making trades because of their situations.  The Mets, under new ownership, want to make a statement and apparently they have the money to do so.  The Rangers officially open up a new stadium (with fans) and don't have much of a team to draw those fans in so got to do something to get them excited.   The Angels have gone through yet another year of not making the playoffs and are getting more desperate to cash in on the Trout years.  A fourth team may be the Phillies because ownership promised them a World Series capable team and they are far from it.  These are the teams that may push the top FA salaries up if they want to go that route but generally there are going to be deals out there that were probably unimagined in years past.

Padres To Decline Mitch Moreland’s Option

============

Roster will drop to 38 pre the setting of the Rule 5 roster on November 20th.

===========

Note that the 38 remaining on the roster consists of only 14 position players ... if as predicted they non-tender Garcia .... 13 portion players for 13 roster spots in 2021 and really no top prospects to add that would really help in 2021.

That could be an issue ... so, some focus needs to be on  back-up / AAA adds that could help in 2021.

With no DH, kind of a no-brainer. I don't know how far their anticipated 10 million will go (if that's accurate). I would think they can find some backups. I would put my money into quality relier pitcher(s).

I believe it was Acee (as he always has the stranger reports), that the Padres will look to resign Moreland if the DH is back.  However it was noted that the Padres think they can SAVE money even if they resign Mitchy Two-Bags.  (That statement caught me off guard)  Do the Padres really thing that Moreland would sign for less than 2.5 mil?  Is that really where the market is at?  Or is that just with a fun SD discount?
