Pre-2021 Planning
Quote from Brian Connelly on October 25, 2020, 7:50 amI realize the threat of a lockout or strike looms for 2022. But if players/owners lose an entire season after 2 massively disrupted seasons due to Covid (assuming 21 is), they would really be idiots. Not sure if baseball could recover from that.
Thought of it makes me sick.

We're not dealing with nuclear physicists here, so it is totally possible.
And agreed, would be tantamount to career suicide.

Have to assume NO DH .... getting it for 2021 requires a negotiated agreement between the owners and the MLBPA and that is just one element of a lot of open issues between the two. With the CBA negotiation after 2021, not much incentive to compromise now just for 2021 ... not even sure any negotiations are happening now.

Quote from fenn68 on October 30, 2020, 6:59 amI know we can’t out think Preller’s moves but hearing / reading all the national / local media speculations ... Padres winter moves will (should) focus on one (or more) late inning RP ... higher end types. Minimal thought given to other upgrades.
If as speculated the Padres have “maybe” $10MM additional to deploy and they seek more than one upgrade ... not going to be a great fit without some of those speculated DFA/non-tenders to open more payroll space.
Padres have begun shedding a lot of non-player personnel to save money (as other teams are doing) ... are we really confident that the Padres actually are willing to commit an additional $10MM to player salaries?

No. Not if you mean "2o MM" total. Think we got sucked into "150 MM" early on which I THOUGHT did come from Fowler.
To me it seems unrealistic to raise payroll in the 2nd of 2 financially crushing covid years. I thought coming in AT 145 MM maybe the ceiling. Problematic if it drops from there to 135-140, since really only working with half of that with 70 MM committed to 3 guys....

Actually I meant the first $10MM taking them to a $135MM level, NOT even thinking $150MM is on the table.
Considering the layoffs, non-player terminations, maybe spending $10MM on player adds is maybe too much. $10MM probably translates into 100+ non-player jobs in 2021.
Maybe going with the current roster just tinkered with on the fringe is the reality for 2021 ... no big signs.

Quote from fenn68 on October 30, 2020, 11:28 amQuote from hoffy51 on October 30, 2020, 10:31 amIf that is the case, do you think would Pomeranz be the closer?
Think they would try the mix and match approach initially until someone emerges .... so in certain situations Pomeranz but also take a long look at Pagan (hoping he returns to this TB form) and Adams (hoping his command settles ... he has the stuff). As we saw with Hoffman, Bell, Hand, and Yates ... sometimes they step up with little history. So, keep an eye out for Castillo or any of the other high velocity / high spin rate arms that just need their command to set.
If nothing works out and the Padres are still in contention ... maybe a trade at the deadline.

Quote from Ben Davey on October 30, 2020, 5:04 pmI have seen a rumor circulating around that agents might be encouraging players to take 1 year deals in hopes that the market rebounds next year. In addition there have been some rumblings that IF there is not a large difference in salary, that players would have more options of where to play, leaning to the possibilities that players could base the offseason chasing the ring instead of chasing the $.
It makes sense on paper, and bodes well for the Padres, but if I am a hitter do I really want that? Someone like DJ LeMahieu is already 32. He could wait a year and still be ok, but even then hes coming off a year where he won the batting title. No matter how could a year he has, it will be hard for him to get a big $ deal next year (at 33). But I am thinking more along the lines of Profar or Joc. If they sign with a top 5 team (like the Padres or Dodgers) they probably wont be guaranteed a starting spot. If they sign with a team like the Padres how much value do you gain by being a part time player?
If Padres do indeed have 10 mil to spend, see how low you can offer some people. I do think the Padres need to focus on adding another LHRP. Pom was great but who else did we have? Big game Tim Hill?
