Pre-2021 Planning

PreviousPage 12 of 30Next

We have a really nice starting 8. So next year, we will have 13 positions players on a 26 man roster. So 5 back ups. I say, resign Profar, sign Galvis and Nelson Cruz, Mejia as back up Catcher, and Pillar. If Pillar is too, much, can go with Mateo or Galvis for CF defense and speed. Cut bait with Moreland and Garcia.

If you want to get really crazy, trade Pham for a MiL player. And then sign Ozuna to a 3 or 4 year deal.

Given their on-field limitations, I would say it's close to 100% that both Moreland AND Garcia are not on next year's bench.  Much higher chance of "neither" than "both".

Not really for 2021 but the Padres announced their AZ development squad for Oct-Nov. Looks to be pretty evenly spread across all the levels. Keeping in mind that they do need to field a squad of C-INF-OF-P ... might question some of the inclusions / exclusions but bodies are just needed and never really know any other issues that may limit participation.

Only a few may have a role in 2021 (and maybe are 40 man roster candidates if show well) ... RHP Bachar (Top 30 prospect), relief pitchers Valdez and Wilson, and INF Batten (long shot but given the lack of back-up middle INF slated for AAA/AA someone to watch). Potential ... maybe .... insurance if Preller does not make some moves ... yes.

Did notice they had E. Ruiz as an OF not an INF (where he could not field). As I recall they love his bat speed and punch out of a small frame ... can run ... but after an initial offense burst he ability to hit disappeared. Top 30 guy on athletic skill ... so still a high ceiling / low floor.

Hopefully we get some reporting on how the prospects look and game performances.

Who do we see first in San Diego?

Weathers......Wilcox.......Lawson.

Weathers is 20....Wilcox 21 and Lawson 23.

Weathers ... Padres seem to really love his development and he is LH.

Lawson needs to shake off a bit of rust and show he is healthy ... and Wilcox needs to show he can have the command over a season. Only "advantage" Lawson has if he is pitching well early in 2021 ... he would be on the 40 man most likely and an easy call-up for the pen if needed.

Did the Padres post the names of the 54 player developmental squad?  If so, where can I find it?  Thanks!

It was in the SDUT in an article by Jeff Sanders.

Do Weathers and Lawson start in AAA?

Where do you think Wilcox will start......LE?

Since I like to keep my better young pitching prospects out of EP (and the PCL) ... probably start Lawson in AA AMA. Wilcox probably in A+ LE. Weathers (to start 2021) is a toss up between AA and A+ ... maybe a bit dependent on who else in being sent to AA.

If they go with the theme of older prospects / veteran MiL FA in AAA ... and then send a combo of Gore, Patino, Morejon, Baez, Lawson ... maybe the return of Avila or the promotion of Hernandez filling the five AA slots ... Weathers to A+ might be the start.

Getting quality SP jumping from AA to the ML is now getting common ... so maybe stacking the better arms there actually helps their development.

Will not be a problem to fill the starters for EP: Bachar; Nix; Kennedy; Lucchesi; Perdomo; plus one or two “veteran” non-roster AAA/ML arms as fill.

I guess someone out of all those named above will take that ML 5th SP slot but the pen will not need them given the mix on the current 40 man.

I’ve been a huge advocate for keeping our best pitchers out of the PCL.

Long before Preller actually started doing it.

So that’s fine with me.
