Potential frontline SP trade

I know I’m ready for something positive to happen.

I’d prefer it be for offense....but getting Thor,Kluber or Carrasco would be OK I guess.

😉

Listening to a Cleveland guy and it looks as though they are trying to extend Carrasco ... in turn making it more comfortable in dealing either Kluber or Bauer.

Also, he though the would be OK keeping both if the right deal did not materialize. Two key elements:

1. they clearly want to reduce payroll (so no return piece like Myers fits their plan)

2. they want a return of ML (or ML ready) players with the key being OF ... remember low cost here.

I guess the Padres could be a contender depending on how the Indians view Margot / Renfroe (but don't seem to be individually impactful enough) ... a pitcher would be nice but not their critical need .... and it appears they are not desperately seeking a catcher even after trading Gomes.

LAD seems a better fit IF they are willing to move Verdugo (AAA OF ... high value prospect) plus some other pieces including one of their catching prospect in Ruiz / Smith. I would not rule out Houston (even as an AL competitor) if they lead with OF prospect Tucker. The reporter did not see a match with the Mets.

However, I am being consistently surprised by this winter's deals and the motivation of dropping payroll ... so if the Padres have the salary space?

You mentioned Margot/Renfroe but couldn't they have interest in Reyes/Cordero?

Interest yes ... but not enough to factor them into key trade piece for Kluber.  Maybe Margot (they could use an upgrade in CF) AND one of Renfroe - Reyes - Cordero might move the needle.

Hard to trade any of these OF for their offensive skills / potential when they led an offensive starved Padres to last place ... at least while expecting a major return.

I didn't mean as the main piece of course.

But is it far fetched to think Reyes could well out perform Renfroe next season?

But if they don't want Myers or Mejia we just don't have enough offense to entice them.

If I was forced to pick between Reyes and Renfroe for 2019 offense .... Reyes is the man and I would not be surprised that if was not by a large margin. Sadly, I agree with an earlier post that because of his size ... he has Kyle Blanks 2.0 risk. If he got to the AL as a DH he COULD be a Frank Thomas / David Ortiz ... I know that is overhype this early but the base is there. Best bet for the Padres is he stays healthy and hits lights out in 2019 and they use him as a trade chip next winter coming off a longer run of success. Now don't think any AL team would pull the trigger with any meaningful return piece.

Think you hit the key point ... for an elite piece like Kluber or Thor ... Padres really don't have that offensive piece(s) that are ready now to add more value to a contender than the value lost from Kluber or Thor. There are other teams than can offer more.

Thought just popped into my head:  Garrett Richards signing not official b/c Pads haven't made a corresponding 40-man move yet.

BUT maybe they have a handshake agreement about his 1st year being at a certain minimum amount (say 3 MM); but with Preller/Pads having flexibility to split the $ differently depending on circumstances... i.e. move more $$ into '19 possibly

Allows possible dead $ pickup (Kipnis) as part of a trade, but can go the other direction if a large payroll increase (i.e. Kluber trade or major FA sign) doesn't happen in '19 (free up more $ for 2020)

Nationals To Sign Patrick Corbin

This should make the cost of any available  quality SP just go up by taking the top FA SP off the market to a team that may not have "needed" him as much as other contenders.

Looks as though the NL East is going to be a real battleground for adding talent .... moves by Nats, Phillies, Mets may just be the beginning .... Atlanta you are next!

IF the Padres have anything that appeals to any of those teams .... might get a better return IF the Pads will accept prospects ... those teams are not going to diminish the ML rosters of key pieces and the Padres don't have the level of ML players to entice such a move.

Myers to either Atlanta or Philly ... both have money and need

Renfroe to either Atlanta or Philly ... see above

Hedges to the Mets ...

We will see.

I still think(hope) we can match up with Atlanta.

I really want Camargo or Riley for 3B.

Hoping they decide they need Myers,Stammen,Yates etc....

Me too. Might be an interesting debate in the Braves' front office with Riley vs. Camargo as their trade chip. Most love the prospects with high ceiling (Riley) but his value in AAA while battling Phil / NYM / Wash is not all that much. Camargo has done it at the ML level, is still young, plus over time he still has versatility would cover a lot for a contending team and can settle back to 3B post-Donaldson. Having either Myers or Renfroe now (and for 3-4 more years) might be worth the POTENTIAL of a 3B that can be covered by Camargo.

Could be interesting unless Atlanta can find a different RF with the large supply of pitching prospects.
