Potential frontline SP trade
Quote from Brian Connelly on April 1, 2019, 11:00 pmQuote from David Nevin on April 1, 2019, 5:49 pmPadres acquire Matt Wisler from the Reds for RHP Diomar Lopez.
Is this our RH starter to take Margevicius’s spot and send him back to AA or is Wisler gonna stay
a reliever?
Good move getting Wisler back. Worth a look; still only 26, finished strong last year & good ST this year, and maybe Balsley can help him stay/get on track. I think he's at least the 6th/spot starter over Erlin. I think he'll eventually get a look in rotation. He's pitched 130 & 125 Innings last 2 years combined Majors/Minors.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 3, 2019, 5:20 pmGreen on Lamet:
“He just threw an up-and-down side session of close to 50 pitches,” said Green. “The arm looks good. He’s throwing everything. He’s not throwing a ton of sliders currently. It’s a full-mix arsenal. The velocity is there. I think all that is exciting for us. He’s as strong as an ox every time you see him. He works so hard. We’re very pleased with him right now.“Mid-summer is our target for Lamet. And if he exceeds that, great and if he’s a little bit late . . . whatever time he needs, he is going to get. We’d like to see his return it as a jolt for us while contending. Those kinds of arms (Lamet and Garrett Richards) showing up later to get us a real opportunity to do some special things. We obviously understand the limitations our rotation has going into the season with innings. When you see Lamet, it fits nicely in our head that he could be there at the right time for us.”
I can’t remember where but I’m pretty sure I mentioned this....Lamet and/or Richards coming in late in the season to take over innings for Strahm and Paddack.

Quote from fenn68 on April 4, 2019, 12:14 pmLamet may be back late in the season but coming off TJ doubt he is back to eat many innings ... more a careful build-up approach. Even more surprised if Richards is back other than some token work very late in the season.
More likely they move to Allen or Quantrill ... if they are doing well in AAA ... or make the big prospect promotion of Morejon if he is on in AA (maybe AAA later).
A side on Lamet .... great stuff ... still good potential ... but did not exactly dominate in his ML time before TJ .... so, still a wait and see prospect.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 4, 2019, 2:31 pmKluber's stock pointed straight down after 1st 2 starts AND Indians OF off to predictably awful start has GOT to in 2 separate ways put pressure on them to make a deal... they could still do a "now"/MLB focused type deal but skew it more towards imminent AAA/AA prospects (i.e. a "cheap" version) I proposed.
They can make a half convincing arugment to their fan base that they are trying to improve this year's team... while, oh yeah, also reducing payroll.
Dovetails with Pads needs and with Machado/Tatis in semi "go for it" mode to not trade KEY guys off MLB roster: I'd back off Lucchesi now, so maybe something like: Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen or Eric Lauer, Trey Wingenter, & Austin Allen for Kluber plus MAYBE a "small" $ kick in (and a cut or 2 from their 40-man).
This is one top 100 prospect who failed to claim a wide open rotation spot, poor defensive OF who is timesharing, our temporary 7th inning guy (at best) till Jose Castillo returns, and a 25 yr old C in AAA who is utterly blocked on depth chart for a Cy Young winner. But immediate OF/bullpen/C help for Indians & 5-6 yrs of a LH SP.... and, oh yeah, 55 MM in salary relief.
Pads dramatically increase dark horse odds THIS year (and next) by not giving up Myers, Yates, or Lucchesi.

I'd like to think they'd take that, but two starts in March and April is not "trending down." Not for a pitcher as accomplished as Kluber. CLE would want more along the lines of what Brian mentioned.

Quote from fenn68 on April 4, 2019, 6:16 pmIndians will wait until the trade deadline before they really do anything ... they pretty much knew their offense would be challenged but their only chance to win was holding their SP together. No reason to change that approach now ... especially for a group of low ceiling players that will not help them win now (or probably in the future).
If they wanted to deal either Bauer or Kluber for a cluster of players they could have done that at any point this winter ... they did not. At least by holding until July they reignite (potentially) a cluster of contending clubs that will offer up more (or at least a higher ceiling lead player).
Since I doubt the Padres will be challenging for the playoffs ... they likely will pass at the price point and continue to develop / nurture the prospects.
Just a reminder on Kluber ... he has 3 years of control but the last two are club options creating an escape valve if he really tanks ... don't know how that alters the thinking in a trade but does lessen the financial risk for the buyer.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 7, 2019, 5:26 amReally need a good outing from Strahm today......5-6 innings.
I know it’s only been one start....but what if he just doesn’t have it as a starter yet?
How long before he moves back to the Pen(which we are gonna need more RP this season) and we make a move for a starter?
4 starts?........more?
What of Kuechel is about to sign somewhere after his 3rd start?
Just wondering what it’s gonna take for AJ to “make a move”?

Barring a series of total disasters by Strahm (or any of the other SP) would be surprised if the Padres made a move to add a SP ... primarily hard to see in April any other team dealing A GOOD SP vs. holding until nearer the trade deadline to generate some more completion for a deal (and get a better return).
Padres still need to prove they will be a winning team ... or least a good chance of being a winning team ... and that will take 1-2 months before they would consider overpaying for a plug in SP.
I could see the first move being dropping in either Erlin or Wisler back into a starting role ... maybe even calling up Avila for AA (on the 40 man). Allen and Quantrill ... neither on the 40 man ... looked bad in their initial AAA starts but that could turnaround by late April and then could be options. Plus their approach with Margevicius ... who knows on a surprise such as Morejon (who they really like), or journeyman Enns, Keel, or Overton as fill. Oh yea, Mitchell is starting in EP.
Getting the sense they would prefer to keep working their prospects rather than bringing in a mediocre journeyman ... and will not go for a quality SP add until they are clearly in contention (and only if the prospects have left a hole).
IF they went FA ... Edwin Jackson might surface ... he does eat innings when he is on and from what I remember a good clubhouse guy. Other FA are not really all that appealing: Colon; Gonzalez; Shields; Tillman; or Gallardo. Kuechel looks to be playing the game of waiting past the June draft (shedding the tie to the Comp Pick) and energizing multiple contending teams needing SP into the bidding to get his multi-year / big money deal.
