The only reason (IMO) to "not" have one is if you have a bona fide Ace that is not on any innings limit that you would be limiting his starts.

I realize we would probably just send Margavicius down to AA....which would be OK.But if we do I would like to promote either Allen or Quantrill,whichever pitches well in their first few starts,and go with a 6 man.

I would prefer this over shutting down Paddack and/or Strahm in August.

I would say that IF we sign Kuechel, after he takes a couple of weeks in EST, the reason you could not go with a 6 man is it would screw up the rest days that these guys are used to getting. I could see using a piggy back situation to limit innings and keeping guys on proper rotation.

So lets say, Kuechel, Lauer, Paddock/Allen, Luchessi, Strahm/Quantril for a 5 day rotation.

Unless he really gets bombed in the coming starts ... think Margevicius (who really is not on an innings limit) will get a decent starting run. At some point do think he will bumped out but till then buys some time.

With Paddack and Strahm working under some innings control limit .... why not just piggy back them? Maybe alternate starts with being flexible with innings for the starter and innings for the second in. That could have a secondary benefit of having the rest of the bullpen function "normally" in support of the other four starters.

Does sound more as though they will make extensive use of spot starters or bullpen days to break up the schedule (never hurts for occasional extra rest even for Lauer / Lucchesi). Also, expect to see some starts skipped once they start hitting off days. Maybe a more sneaky approach to innings control with multiple strategies deployed throughout the year.

I really don't see how putting a 6th starter in the rotation and adding "one" day additional rest for these "kids" would be a negative.

That's 7 SP for 5 spots, leaving only 6 RP in pen AND short a position player on bench.  I get that in theory don't need as many RP due to piggybackers, but may not work out that way game to game.

If they did get Keuchel, Stroman, someone like that, what they could do is employ a 6 man rotation but with new experienced guy making his start every 5th day, with all others every 6 days but extra days of rest interspersed.  It'd look like: 1,2,3,4,5,1,6,2,3,4,1,5,6,2,3,1,4,5,6 etc.  Limits all but new guy to 27 starts @ avg 5 IP per = 135 outer limit for Paddack & Strahm.
