(note: I think both Cleveland and Miami want players to plug in for 2019 ... low cost ... long control suggesting that Baez maybe not be close enough to the majors to be a compelling piece). Hard to guess which Padres pitching prospects OTHER teams value ... for all we know they really want Quantrill

Padres OF becomes Myers - Jankowski (L) - Cordero (L) - PTNL 4th OF? No OF top OF prospects near term. Don't see it unless they can hold out one of the OF and sub other pieces but that really does not work for Cleveland and not sure what ML level subs could replace the OF for Miami unless the all SP with Lucchesi - Lauer - L.Allen and maybe A.Allen keeping Renfroe (or Reyes if Renfroe is a better fit for Cleaveland).

Of course then the SP is Kluber - Strahm - ? - ? - ? while moving the payroll to about $100-110MM ... so not a lot of flexibility.

Having a tough time doing both deals and leaving enough Padre roster pieces to even get better. So, gamble on Mejia for the Padres #1 catcher? Deal Hedges, Margot, and Renfroe, a ML ready SP out of Lucchesi, Lauer, Allen, Quantrill, Nix, Paddack for 3 years of Kluber? Don't know.

I think they can do both rather easily with the systems depth... Indians are looking for Win Now pieces and a top P prospect in the Kubler deal... Marlins likely want more AA-AAA/MLB types that are almost at the MLB level but not quite as that checks their timetable...

 

So lets say

Kubler for Margot  + Nix + Logan Allen + Yates + Hedges + Naylor

JT R for Mejia + Morejon + Baez + Ona (just a note here Miami loves them Cubans) +Arias+ Renfroe

 

After the massive exodus we still have a better team at the MLB level, and are still loaded prospect wise

C- JT R, 1B Hosmer, 2B Kinsler, SS Urias, 3B??? LF Myers, CF Cordero, RF Reyes

SP- Kubler, Lauer, Lucchesi, Strahm and Co.. with Lamet pushing at the break, Paddack/Erlin/Quantrill all in line to get some MLB SP assigments... Richards (2020) comes in next season to give us a legit post season 1-2 punch

 

Back to 3B... Franco/Andujar... Franco should be rather inexpensive /Andujar would cost more BOTH probably need to wait until Machado picks Philly or NYY.... door #3 Moose (as a FA) 1+1 type deal

Price tag is everything ... and a lot of teams are wanting to add pitching but little movement at the top end making it clear that the price tag is over player value. Even although the consensus is that the NYY want to move Gray ... apparently they see the demand and are holding out for more than anyone thinks he is worth. Bad market to be a buyer of SP ... and not sure the sellers are all that committed to sell.

Not holding my breath on the Padres being the team to overpay.

I realize JTR costs a lot more than Hedges, but wouldn't it make way more sense for Indians to center the Kluber trade around getting JTR?    Something like JTR (2 yrs control), Yates (2), Renfroe or Reyes(5 or 6), Lauer (6)--they have no LH SP-- is pretty damn compelling!

"Only" saves them about 3 MM this year & likely next, but Tribe should come out ahead on WAR for the 1st 2 years.  Bauer is out the door either next year via trade or 2020 as FA, so they may have to re-tool then anyway.

For Pads net increase of 10 MM massively upgrades MLB SP, solves outfield logjam, Yates has been awesome but is expendable....  I think it might be more "cost" effective to re-sign Galvis at SS and plug Tatis in @ 3B where he can play with & learn from a real pro at the position (ditto for Urias).  That would probably put Pads > 100 MM.  Remaining need would be backfilling cheap at RP.

THIS part of deal I would do, but it's about what it takes to pry JTR away from Miami that's the much bigger question...

Re Overpaying... big question is who is going to overpay more... 1st team to make a trade, or subsequent.  I think it's latter.

And I dont see how CLE would be interested in Hedges since they just gave us Mejia. However, and I know they are difficult, but have been rumored/happened this off season a 3 way trade. One where we get Kluber, CLE gets Realmuto and Margot, and MIA gets prospects that they need for the rebuild.

Your 2019 rotation then becomes Kluber, Luchessi/Lauer, Cobb, Mitchell, Strahm, and then MiL ready guys.

Your 2020 Rotation becomes Kluber, Richards, Cobb, Paddock, Allen, and/or the mix from above. And if the young guys are performing well and the vets too, then you have some trade fodder.

But I like the combo of Hedges defense and the possibility of Mejias offense.

Is the difference between Realmuto for only 2 seasons that much greater than 6 years of Mejia?

I wouldn't think so,especially since our window to compete is just now even starting to open.

I would only be OK with dealing for Realmuto if it was to turn around and trade him to improve in a different area.
