We have to make progress....cant go from 0 to 60..even the fastest cars need 3 or 4 seconds...
Step one acquire as many assets as possible (1st 2 seconds) ..id needs and add..3rd second...make the last major moves to get you there (final second)...1st part rebuilding is over...2nd part is now getting closer to the goal...3rd parr is next yr #playoffs 2020...sometimes you make that move a yr early and find yourself in the hunt..think Phillies 2018...adding Noah and say Gray or Kilkuchi to the rotation could easily pit us in the 72-75 Win area..adding a 3B and having one career yr from a young gun..a Roy campaign from one of the rooks...and Hosmers typical odd year ..4-5 WAR .. and this team could push 80+ Wins in 19...Richards a Big Bat added for 20 and conrinued development and graduations from our prospects and voila #playoffs2020..

Oh Henry. Except Noah is injury prone every year and never pitched 200 innings.

Why put chips in a pot holding a 2/9 offsuit.
Even if we dealt exclusively from positions of substantial depth. Mejia, Renfroe, Naylor. It still only amounts to 80 wins and increased risk through the volatility of an injury prone pitcher.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 14, 2018, 5:47 pmWhat if the deal is centered around an injury prone Corner OF/1b/3B with no natural position on a bad deal?
You guys still wouldn’t want Syndergaard if the cost was Myers/Hedges/Stammen/Quantrill?

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 14, 2018, 5:55 pmAppearantely some here think we van win it all with Lauer Lucchesi and Nix going against Strasburgh Scherzer and Corbin in the NLCS in the next 3 4 5 yrs...
Lets just hoard all of our prospects watch their value diminish and enjoy the ONE or TWO that maybe become All Stars or hell even regular players at the MLB level which are about the odds for our 10 top 100 prospects......
The time is now to trade some of those chips for proven 3+ yrs controlled MLB level assets...and try to ID the 2 (studs in our top 10 that are must keeps)...a...and improve our MLB club and our odds ..

At least he wouldn’t cost us any prospects.
What would be a Decent contract for him?
4/70?

MLBTradeRumors has him at $82MM / 4 years which seems reasonable for a soon to be 31 year old with his track record. Scott Boras is his agent ... so the current ask (both years and AAV) is much higher.
I seems that would fit the Padres target timeline (4 years) and they can handle the AAV of $20MM for a top of the rotation SP. Adding a 5th year likely would get it done: $100MM/5 years.
He is a soft contact guy and should do well with a plus defense ... and a Hosmer - Urias - Tatis INF should work well for him then the 3B better consider plus defense. Allows the Padres to ease into the top SP prospects slower sorting out the real top prospects from the very good and using some for trade chips.
I could be a good signing (if at that level). Boras seems to like the Padres future (Hosmer was his guy) and Hedges plus some minor league guys are his. Likely he would be comfortable with a Padres signing for his client. Could work. Long shot I guess.

Entirely different discussion. You're now talking about moving a net neutral or net negative asset in Myers and a no future value guy in Stammen.

Who thinks that? And who thinks we'll be playing the ancient Nationals rotation in 3, 4, 5 years?

Quote from fenn68 on December 14, 2018, 7:29 pmI have to go back on the Syndergaard discussion ... why would the Mets give up 4.2 of current WAR for prospects while not replacing (and increasing) the expected WAR for 2019 ... they did not just deal for Cano to not compete.
Padres just don't have the trade chips to improve the 2019 Mets. the NYM-Mia-SD had some logic but does not look as though Mia would settle for less than ML / ML ready impact pieces ... and the Padres don't have enough of those (especially since it appears Mia is fixated on hitters).
Keuchel is possible (it is only money) but IF they want to pursue front of the rotation current talent ... the Padres need to dangle those prospect in front of non-contenders (e.g. AZ and Greinke)
