Padres vs. Dodgers

PreviousPage 6 of 13Next

I do not understand why the Padres don't just give Quantrill a regular start. Do they know something we don't? I mean he pitched well enough that he should have earned the #5 spot, in both spring training and summer camp. Lucchesi was sent down. The rotation spot should be his. If you never give him a chance to be anything but a long reliever then that is all he will ever be.

Quantrill was a first round pick. He was our best starter for a good amount of time last year. Give the man a chance!

Thank you for that......They keep jerking him around....give him the start that he earned or trade him

I have to agree.  I don't "get" why the Pads aren't opening that door.  It's great that Quantrill is "versatile", but it's kind of a curse or backhand compliment.  The one thing I can think of is that Q sometimes did start games slow (1st inning) last year, and with the extra P's available, they're trying to avoid that?

I am admittedly armchair QB here, but Patino this year is reminding me of Morejon last year where the callup was too early & too "cute".

Padres must be seeing something they are worried about with Quantrill at this point since they have been fully behind his potential coming up in the minors (and many on this site just wanted to dump him) and last year he did get 18 starts ... unfortunately with a 5.69 ERA. His best work came out of the pen in 5 appearances with a 0.79 ERA.

So they did give him a pretty full shot last year ... and he had a very good run in July but totally fell apart in late August / Sept. He did have his chance but did not make the most of it.

Couple last year with only 5.2 innings in 2020 (in 16 Padre games) and an unimpressive 4.76 ERA ... not sure he as earned the starting role ... on the other hand ... no one else has. Beginning to think the Padres may be relegating Quantrill to the back burner and maybe even a trip to the alternative site.

Doubt they trade him ... given the gap between his potential (still good) and his performance (not so go) that likely ruins any kind of "fair" return.

Padres have updated their rotation for the Dodgers series: Mon: Luis Perdomo Tue: Garrett Richards Wed: Zach Davies Thu: Chris Paddack

Extra day of rest for Richards? or a match up move getting Perdomo to be the sacrifice with May going on Mon?

Hopefully, more strategic than sending out the sacrificial lamb.  Pretty much all bullpen pieces should be available today except for Patino.   As I indicated earlier, if Perdomo can keep it on the ground and get through the line-up at least once, we have a chance from the pitching aspect.  Getting to May is another story as his stuff was exceptionally nasty against us.  Got to sit on and not miss the one or possibly two hittable pitches he might give you in an AB - he's not going to walk very many so this will truly be a test of our RH hitters.  Got to see some quality ABs from Hosmer, Grisham and Cronenworth in order for us to win.

Somehow I think that if Gore or Patino has a 5.69 ERA after 18 starts they will still be starting. Quantrill's July 2020 was awesome, not just good. He wore down at the end of the year. You know how you fix that? You build him up by giving him more work, not less.

It just seems the Padres have given up on Quantrill. They never gave him a chance to win the #5 spot because he outpitched Lucchesi repeatedly. Now your #5 starter gets sent down and your replacements #5...stays in the bullpen? And they call up Perdomo?

I don't know if they've given up on Quantrill but rather trying to find out what his best role is.  Won't be a short man since we already have many of those; so either it's long relief or a starter.  If our objective is to get Paddack, Lamet, Richards and Davies as many starts as possible then you can spot start him or have him come in and do long relief, which could be the situation today depending on how long Perdomo goes and whether we want lefties or righties after him.  It's possible to see Quantrill start against Colorado or Texas depending on how the series goes with LA.  I'll have to observe more closely what he's been doing this year, but doesn't seem to have made an impression - better than Lucchesi but that was a low bar.  He's had his chances in the past to nail down a rotation spot but lost out to Lauer/Lucchesi/Logan Allen/Margevicius.  I know he struggled in El Paso and in San Antonio before that.  Seems like he's more hittable than he should be - kind of like Nix.  Let's see what happens in the next week.

Get a break with Seager not being in the line-up but still have power bats Pederson, Bellinger, Muncy and Rios from the left side.  Then there's Betts, Turner and Taylor to account for so it won't be easy for Perdomo and those that follow.  Let's hope we can show a little better against May and our pitchers keep it close.  Go Padres!

I think they switched because there was no long RP available if Richards went tonight.  This makes more sense:  Perdomo & Quantrill pitch a lot today, Patino becomes available as a long/garbage guy tomorrow.  Switching the starts also of course gives Richards an extra day of rest, and makes it more likely that 1 of Perdomo or Quantrill gets optioned instead of Perdomo if they "need" another arm for tomorrow.
