Padres vs. Dodgers

Exciting finish, but failure to drive in runs in the 6th and 7th possibly cost us the game.
Takeaways - morale victory that we can come back against the Dodgers, but still a loss. Patino learned a lot with this outing and if Machado could have only come up with that ground ball for at least one out, that also could have made a difference. Strahm and Guerra pitched well and Patino looked good in his last inning. Got the most we could out of the bottom of the line-up.
Bad news: Richards didn't look sharp and hopefully he's still just working off the rust. We'll see when he faces the Dodgers again next week. Need him to solidify the rotation if we are going to compete with LA and Col.

Considering the LAD are the national consensus top team in the NL .... Padres played the well and had the character to make runs even after fall behind ... so the base of progress.

The continual coming back WAS awesome. Could easily have tied the game w/ 2 outs in 9th, with LAD having used Jansen. Probably 60-40 we win then? It was frustrating, but a great throw from OF, clearly out... on we go.
BUT did anyone else have an issue with Patino debuting right there?!? After we'd just gotten back into game with Tatis 2 run bomb? Just seems like a weird debut choice in such a big game. Not banging on Patino, loved how he looked & his composure incl shutting them down the next inning, but if I'm a vet player esp in pen, I'd be questioning that move...
That to me was where the game might have been lost. Fair to question that decision.

I was thinking the same that it was bad timing for his debut.
Would have been a great story if he shut them down for two innings and we came back to win but that was some tough
assignment for his first appearance.
As far as that last out it appears Grisham was just a hair too late getting off of 3rd once the ball was caught.
Turned out to make all the difference.
Have to be careful of course to not leave too early but he seemed to hesitate "just" a tick too long.

Grisham was visibly very upset afterwards... might have been mad at himself feeling he "should have" made it.

Going to make a guess that on Tuesday (the TBD SP) the Padres go with either Strahm or Pomeranz as the SP to start a bullpen day.
LAD are #4 in OPS in the ML vs. RHP (.784) but only #18 vs. LHP (.704). Then add that Patino was used today and the Quantrill and Perdomo were warming up although not used.

I’d like to see a Quantril/Morejon piggyback.
Finish with Pen depending on score.

I’m wrong again ... Perdomo gets the start on Tuesday to lead a what will likely be an all in bullpen day.

Jumping over tomorrow's game for now, Perdomo needs to keep the ball on the ground in his stint vs LA as he has done so far this year. Hope he's able to make it all the way through the batting order and give our offense a chance. I'm thinking Strahm and Pomeranz to get us to Yates if we are ahead in this one, but it may really depend on who is not used tomorrow after Richards. Got to be very careful with RH batters Betts and Pollock, if that is the case. Dodgers are very very tough, especially at home.

I actually feel like you have to option Patino for a fresher arm; he can't go tomorrow, and Perdomo/Q earmarked for Wed.... there's really not enough length in the pen for the next 2 days with Patino there... alternatively I'd suggest Hill down, but the entire purpose for acquiring him sounds like it was helping deal with all the LAD LH hitters.
