Padres vs. Dodgers

PreviousPage 10 of 13Next

An unexpected move by Roberts to give Gonsolin a spot start, thus moving Urias to Thursday and taking Kershaw out of the series.  Gonsolin had a successful start in his only other appearance but has only pitched 4 innings so far this year.  Given the change, Padres probably stick with the same line-up with the exception of Mejia replacing Hedges.  Hedges has had two very good game for him and his pick-up and tag of Taylor on that bullet/hop from Tatis was spectacular, particularly because Taylor was gunning for him in retribution for Tatis running over Smith.   The big difference was Smith did not allow a sliding lane to the plate, which he is supposed to do, while Hedges did.  Dodgers were trying to bully the Padres but it led to costing them a big run and momentum that could have changed that game.

VERY satisfying!

Machado's big drive was so important to give the team a comfortable margin so they could go with the exact guys in the pen they did.    Now pen is rested & at full strength (except Yates?)  I'm not going to say Lamet = deGrom, Scherzer #1 ace types, but I really am starting to think our top 4 SP collectively are =/> anyone.  Going forward for now, the #5 spot is now sandwiched after Lamet & before Richards, which I can DEFINITELY live with them handling however they want... likely another "pen" game in Colorado.

Taylor running into Hedges wasn't just cheap, it was stupid; he probably would have been safe if he'd just slid to the back of the plate.  Might have amped the Pads a little.  Did anyone else notice Pierce Johnson went WAY high & inside with a 95 FB to Austin Barnes who was the on-deck batter that Hedges got into it with after the play?

Profar's adventures in the OF did NOT make me feel comfortable with him as a 4th OF.  LAD's 1st run was really on him.  But I will say this:  "Profar offers the best combination of patience & pop" of any guy on Pads bench.  Which might explain why he continues to be in lineup vs RHP...

What if Hosmer DH, JC @ 1B, Garcia @ 2B today?  Unlikely b/c leaves Profar out after hitting a HR

Would really like to see Grisham sit the getaway game vs LH Urias with the start to Olivares.  Also France @ 1B that game.  Heavy RH lineup to give some guys a day off...

Hosmer out of the lineup with Garcia in.  Thought he would be rested against Urias tomorrow, which he probably will, but obviously want to take precautions with Hosmer's health and he can pinch-hit in a key spot if necessary.  Will be a different look for LA and hopefully Davies can follow Richards with another very good 5+ inning outing.  If he does that and we are very patient in our ABs against Gonsolin, should have a chance for another W.   Go Padres!

Well, Padres may have to make a “precautionary” call on Hosmer to make sure he is fully healthy for the final 5 weeks of the season .... he may be better served just building back to playing strength at the alternative site (food, medication, et al) than traveling to AZ/Texas and staying in hotels. Did watch him against the LAD and he does look like he lost a lot of weight. Also, did not look sharp on a couple balls in the field. Short term loss for a longer term gain?

Maybe a window to add Mateo (Myers / France / Garcia can handle 1B). I guess they could call up Naylor.

Am I the only one that feels tonights game is a big one?

We have a chance to make a real statement.

Winning 3 of 4 from the Dodgers in their house early in this short season would be huge.

Plus we have Paddack going.

Splitting would be good....but I want "huge"!

The schedule appears easier as we go....so staying a few games over .500 through the first 30 games is big I believe.

As is keeping up with LA and CO.

For a change I got a player evaluation right ... Davies was a “great” pick-up. When I saw his 4 years of AWAY stats really thought that would play with SD (and PETCO).

Plus on the Padres staff ... coming off three hard throwers in Lamet, Paddack, and Richards he just has to drive hitters crazy. He must also drive the “analytics” guys crazy with results without the big K%, et al. Nice to see a “pitcher” who actually knows how to pitch.

On the other hand, really underestimated Grisham ... better in CF than billed and a very very good understanding of the strike zone .. doesn’t do a lot of chasing pitches ... leads the team win BB yielding a high OBP even without a high BA. All around, a much better CF option that Margot.

Lauer and Urias for Davies and Grisham looks to be a plus on both parts.

Fenn,  ?? on Hosmer??   Tingler said he was scheduled for a day off after 2 starts; just stuck to that schedule despite RH taking LH SP's spot in rotation.  Actually said "he'll be back in there tonight" even though it's now LH Urias.  We'll see, but don't think he's going back on IL; if he wasn't ready to come off, they wouldn't have activated him in the first place.

Complete dominance by Dodgers pitchers - we basically looked like last year's team on offense except for a few pockets of OB efforts.  Got to hand it to LA, they are a very good team.  Davies was exceptional against that line-up; Stammen doesn't seem to have much left in the tank.  I think he moves to the very back of the bullpen if not DFA'd.  With Paddack, anything is possible.  Beat LA!

Stammen looks like the 15th pitcher on this staff ... age has likely gotten to him. Was not all that sure about the signing last winter ... and for two seasons. Not a likely to be released (don't think he can be DFA'd) at least in the near term ... he does go to the post when called upon and that has some value in keeping the better part of the pen from being over used.
