Padres vs Diamond Backs Game Thread
Quote from MrPadre19 on April 21, 2018, 4:35 amHe didn’t “butcher” it really but he took two steps in on first contact and then turned to give chase and it went over his head.
Ball landed A few feet in front of the warning path......so was playable.
A more experienced CF would have made the play.
Which plays right into the “bad luck” scenario.
4 outs away and of all things it’s a liner to the least experienced fielder in the game.
To top it off Ross doesn’t even get the win.

He made the transition to the outfield midway through 2015 when it was clear that staying on the infield was simply untenable (he never could get his footwork anywhere near workable). As with most aspects of his game, his phenomenal athleticism allows him to look spectacular at times, but his poor baseball instincts make him look pretty brutal at times. Last night, the latter won out.

Not to mention another K swinging in the dirt
Hey, you're welcome to arrive at your wrong conclusions however you want, "coach." But you'd best stay away from talking to anyone who draws a paycheck in any capacity from any major league organization if you're not able to process information that all of them use regularly.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 21, 2018, 10:28 amThank you David and David.
Sounds like Franchy has lightning in his legs, thunder in his bat, and rocks in his head.
Kid obviously needs to play every day down in El Paso.
Repetition, repetition, repetition!

To what end? It's not like we have a major league center fielder blocking him.

Quote from fenn68 on April 22, 2018, 10:36 amFor reference Cordero has played 193 minor league games in CF (plus 97 in LF and 8 in RF). I would expect to see him (as long as he is up) in both LF and RF and Margot will hold CF. His defense (or lack there of) will not hold him down given his overall athletic skills and big power (plus LHH) and his comparatively young age vs. the rest of the OF. No other real OF prospects in AAA or AA.

Quote from fenn68 on April 22, 2018, 10:38 amA bit more watchful concerning Hedges (I know a bit of a taboo in criticizing him) but in 2018:
PA (40): 158/175/237 slash line for SD pitchers
PA (64): 131/172/262 slash line for Austin Hedges (note career in about 650 PA ... 192/238/342)
Sure they love his defense but on a team that is (and has been struggling offensively) how long can the Padres carry a catcher with that lack of offense? That career OBP is truly ugly and a .342 SLG is also well below the norm. Unfortunately Ellis is not the answer (old and not much better as a hitter) and then in AAA Lopez / Nicholas MIGHT be able to provide more offense but are not considered much defensively (hence aging fringe players). Would not be surprised that at some point we see Lopez or Nicholas up (injury to Hedges or Ellis but maybe just release Ellis). Maybe not a quality defender but the catching future of Allen (still hitting in AA after A+ last season) has just gotten brighter ... 2020 (but maybe 2019). Bottom line is that the clock on Hedges is likely running and unless he can get above the Mendoza line ... start looking over his shoulder.

Quote from fenn68 on April 22, 2018, 10:39 amRenfroe going DL buys another 10 days for someone (time for another timely injury ... whose turn?). Assuming the rumor that Lauer is going to be activated to pitch in Perdomo's spot next week ... a move still has to be made and it is likely a position player given they will need the max RP in Colorado if history is a teacher. That could be the return of Cordero to AAA and avoid (for now) dealing with releasing either Szczur or Headley (just keep hanging on to them to ensure against injuries and the odd chance that later in the season someone will pick them up for a PTNL or Cash) we are talking bench players so no big issue holding them vs optioning others.

You've given up on Margot already? Surely he deserves the rest of this year to see if he can build upon last years solid rookie campaign?

He posted an OPS at or under 700 for 4/5 months he played and was trending downward.
