Padres vs Diamond Backs Game Thread

Page 1 of 4Next

So today the Pads are in Arizona playing the D'backs......After a much needed day off hopefully Tyson Ross gives them a good start and the bats and defense get back on track.

After a dismal performance against the Dodgers they really need to get going in the right direction as you can't be giving ground to your NL West opponents

Go Pads !!!!

BTW- I just took it upon myself to start the Game Threads.....C'mon people....I know there are more than 6 or 7 Padre fans around here

Let's get this forum going 🙂

So we know Yates in - Perdomo out. Assume Myers in - Sczur out before today's game. But who goes when Margot comes back today or tomorrow?  I say Cordero. Still way too many Ks for his other qualities to overcome and make him worth a roster spot. Asuaje is other option.

I would agree with Cordero....his 4 K night against the Dodgers was just ugly.

He seems to have zero knowledge of the strike zone and is what I would call....a free swinger or zip code hitter...if it's in the zip code

Swing

Myers is reinstated, Webb optioned to El Paso.  Guessing they wanted to keep Szczur as a backup CF until Margot is ready, then they will probably make the move.

To be honest with you I would like to see Szczur stay because if nothing else he a professional.

He knows his role on this team and always seems ready to go when he gets called upon and he doesn't hurt you in any way.

He always seems to have solid at bats and knows the strike zone and what he is capable of....I for one would rather see them move Cordero down until he learns the strike zone and comes up with a plan when he steps into the batters box because right now both him and Renfro don't seem to have a plan other than try to jerk everything they see out of the yard.

When Margot is activated ... would expect Cordero to be optioned to AAA.

The more interesting move will be when they add a pitcher for Perdomo's start (adding that pitcher will just get the pitchers up to the "normal" 13) ... meaning a position player should get moved. (note report is that Lauer was pulled from his scheduled start today ... so maybe).

Maybe Sczcur ... but maybe Headley (both can't be optioned BUT would open a 40 man roster spot for Lauer). However, I would not be shocked if either Asuaje or Spangenberg (both struggling this year) get optioned and one of the fringe minor league 40 man roster guys get waived. Report is that they expect Pirela to get more time at 2B (vs. LHP) to get him and Renfroe - Margot - Myers in the line-up at the same time while (for now) Villanueva has control of 3B.

For what it's worth, you've completely misdiagnosed his problem.

He's exactly league average with his 30% chase rate. (He's also league average with a 66% swing rate on pitches in the zone.) His issue is that he simply swings through a LOT of pitches, whether they're in the zone or not. League average contact rate is 78%; Franchy is 10% behind that.

To my moderately-trained eye, some of that miss is attributable to mediocre hand-eye coordination. Some of it is attributable to an over-aggressive load. The second can be fixable. The first rarely is.

I use the eye test and when I see him swing at stuff in the dirt....that is a lack of discipline and knowledge of the strike zone and now that he just misplayed a fly ball out that tied the game and lost the no-hitter.....I will continue to use the "eye" test and leave the numbers crunching to people that have never played or coached.....for what it's worth

Not to mention another K swinging in the dirt

How many times and how many years can the Padres luck continue this way?

If we had a few runs tonight.

If Margot or Jankowski were in CF.

If we just ONE time had the Baseball Gods on our side.

But alas......50 years obviously is still not enough!

Did Cordero really butcher that fly ball? He was a SS for awhile right? How long has he been playing CF?
